Dual monitor with vga & dvi

I have a video card that has DVI and HDMI. The computers motherboard has a vga but my computer doesn't detect the monitor when I plug the vga monitor in. Is there anyways to use my stock monitor input and my video card input?

I posted in peripherals but that forum is dead. Thanks in advance.

As far as i know you can use only one video card at a time on your computer. You can go into your BIOS and tell it which one to use (enable/disable on or the other). If you disable the PCIe and enable the onboard then only you can use the port. IMO you cannot use the PCI video output and the mother board video output at the same time.

But why are you trying to do it? its is coz you want to use more than one monitor? in that case you can but a DVI spliter cable (if its supported) or a HDMI to VGA cable.

My friend got me a free monitor 15" non-wide VGA and I was hoping to make use of it as a second monitor. I guess I'm just going to buy a 24" DVI.

aah go it, so you have only one monitor. Look around for a DVI to VGA cables, they are pretty common, they come with a lot of computers and video cards, ask around... you might find one for free. You can also find one on fleabay for a couple of bucks but might have to wait for 2 to 3 weeks.

While I can't really figure out what the OP is saying, for reference you can use more than one video card. Usually its not onboard + dedicated (though I believe I've seen that before, but I can't confirm). You CAN use two dedicated cards. I used an 8800gts pcie card with a 5200 pci card for a 3 monitor setup (wouldve been able to do 4 but I didn't have a 4th screen).

Seems to help if they are from the same manufacturer/use the same driver.

@Chapbass Yeah, I believe they call that crossfire when you use to video cards at once. Not for sure. I'm new to computer tech.

Or SLI depending on the company (ATI = Crossfire, NVidia = SLI). You'll need to know what kind of video card you have before we start making claims it doesn't work. If it's onboard or really old it's likely you'll need at least a dedicated one. I'm not sure exactly when dual monitor video came into play, but all cards and some onboards support it now. So you could probably pick up a card for ~$80 and have dual monitors if your card/chip doesn't support it.

EDIT: OOOOH, Are you trying to plug one into the card and one into the motherboard onboard at the same time? That won't work. You need to plug both the into card or both into the onboard video. Only one is active at a time, and if it is your onboard video that has both inputs you need to take your video card out before it will work.

You have no need for SLI or Crossfire, but you do need to have a dedicated video card with 2 inputs (normally both DVI) or an onboard with 2 inputs (normally VGA, or D-Sub)

Well my video card has two hdmi and two dvi's. The problem is it doesn't have vga. Although the motherboard does. My original post is asking if I can use the vga on the motherboard and dvi on the video card simultaneously.

alright, you need two DVI to VGA cables, or rather, one as long as the other monitor is taken care of. No you can not use both, it is impossible.

No, SLI and Crossfire not what the OP wants to do. The purpose of those configs is to have two video cards driving a single display. The OP just wants a normal setup with 2 independent video cards.

Just grab a DVI to VGA adapter and you'll be set.

EDIT: I see that David has linked one.

Yes, i am aware of that, crossfire SLI and all that, just that you cant use onboard and PCI(e) simultaneously and I am sure most of you might already know, you can also use a USB + (onboard or PCI) together too!!
