Dual Monitor under Linux?

galt

Just got a second monitor, and am looking for a pci video card at a good price. I know Win2k supports dual monitors with 2 video cards, but does Linux? I've got Mandrake 8.2 and Redhat 7.3 at home, and I can't use any other distros. Anybody know how to get dual monitor working uner Linux?

Yes, linux does support it.
I haven't done it myself, so the best advice I can give is google on "Linux dual head howto"

If you want one desktop across both monitors you need to enable Xinerama. I also believe it's possible to have 2 seperate desktops on the different monitors, but I'm not sure how to do that.

There's a TLC on this at tinyminds.org if you needed some help with it. Check the link in my sig and then go the to TLC (Tinyminds Linux Cheatsheets) section. It should be in the X-Windows category.

EDIT: Its actually in the hardware category and its called "Taming The Two Headed Beast" Sorry.

Got mine sut up last weekend using a PCI Voodoo3 & Nvidia AGP card.

One way to get you config files (the one I sued) was to put in the individual cards & monitors & run Xconfigurator.

Once you have a config file for each card, follow the instructions about the xConfig file to combine them.

the second monitor goes in as screenN where N is 1 larger than the 1st screen (usually Screen0) with the appropriate settings for card & monitor.

I didn't have any luck with it in Gnome but KDE3 works fine in both Xinerama & 2 desktop mode.

I used an article I found in Linux Format as my guide.
