Does anyone actually have a 9.5 Gig dual layer DVD burner yet? I have only heard about them in passing.

Nobody has one yet... I will be getting one in the near future! The reason why nobody has them is they were just announced as an upcoming release for Sony Story. The last paragraph says there dual layer drives (not media??) will not ship until the end of the second quarter (May).

the article stops short of saying that it can produce an exact copy of a full featured dvd. Sticky legal issues aside that is the ultimate goal of a dual layer dvd burner is it not?

dvd 9 = under 9 gigs because of the conversion of bits to bytes.

That's wrong to, orignally it was going to be a 5 gigs disc and dual layer was going to be 9 gigs, this was way back when they were still arguing about DVD in the late 90's. To make everybody happy and add the features that the DVD forum members wanted the 5 gigs had to be reduced to 4.7 Gigs and 9 gigs went to 8.5 gigs. It's of course measured using the metric standard and NOT binary so 4.7 Gigabytes is really 4.38 Gibibytes.

There are 9.4GB DVD-Rs out today (and have been out for a while), they are dual-SIDED discs. Dual-LAYERED recordable discs will be 8.5GB just like 99.9999999999999% of the movie DVDs out there.

It is for me.... That is what I have been waiting for (DVD copies without compressing the data more). I can't wait..... The media will be expensive at first but well worth backing up a DVD collection!

This is definately right........ the movie industry's discs are 8.5 Gb dual layer.... we will be able to make perfect backups of our DVDs with these (can't wait for the price of media to drop as this standard is adopted).

if media is really ~$10 per disc that's half the cost of the dvd. moreso if the dvd is multi disc. 50% warranty policy is horrible. better just save the money and use towards hd-dvd collection

Bah. I've been on "Vacation" so I haven't been able to post until now.
Dual Layer DVD (DVD 9)
rolleye.gif

is 8.5 base 10 GB
That's 7.91 base 2 (real) GB
Similarly, DVD 5
is 4.7 base 10 GB
and 4.38 base 2 (real) GB.

Single layer = 4.38GB
Dual Layer = 7.91GB
