Dual Layer vs Double Layer?

Hi guys

I want to burn a DVD burner... but i'm seeing Double and Dual Layers. I can get an NEC Double Layer DVD burner from New Egg for around $60, however a Plextor Dual Layer costs around $120?

So whats the difference? Do they both burn 8.5GB?

Also what the heck is HP Lightscribe? There is a HP DVD burner with Lightscribe for $100? Can someone break it down for me?

Thanks

James

There is only dual format (+ / -) and dual layer 8.x GB capacity, so some person just mistyped "double" for "dual."

Lightscribe : search or Google, it uses the laser to print a label on discs with a special top surface.

Lightscribe blows as it takes FOREVER to finish. At this point I would go with the NEC as it seems to work well with a larger range of media and it's half the price of the Plextor. It also has a thriving modding community to boot. Check out the forums at cdfreaks.com

Yes, but know that not only will it take 30min to burn that Dual Layer DVD but a single blank DL DVD will run you $5-10 right now.

That's not true. 'Double Layer' is used by the +RW Alliance to describe their 8.5GB discs and 'Dual Layer' is used by the DVD Forum to describe their's. AFAIK it's just a marketing thing, but I could be wrong.
