Dual Lan with 802.11b

Ok, please tell my if this setup will work. I want to do internet sharing and networking between my laptop and my desktop. Here's where it gets screwy. I have to have the lappy as the primary computer that my desktop connects to the internet through.

I have 802.11b and an ethernet port on my lappy. Here's the setup. Land line carrying T3 goes into the ethernet port on my lappy. Internet signal gets broadcasted by my lappy's 802.11b to my desktop's 802.11b PCI card. My desktop gets internet, plus my two computers are networked. Would this dual LAN/internet sharing setup work with this 802.11b?

Internet signal gets broadcasted by my lappy's 802.11b to my desktop's 802.11b PCI card.

There is your problem. If this worked we would never need a wireless router. Your laptop card will not act as a router to broadcast the signal to your desktop on command.

Actually, if you run the two wireless clients in AD-HOC mode, it should function very similar to a wired connection, I don't see why this won't work.

Yeah, someone from amdmb said the ad hoc thing too. What exactly is ad hoc? I know that in order to dual LAN using land lines one has to use crossover cables instead of the run of the mill patch cables. Is ad hoc some sort of virtual crossover cable mode?

taken from wi-fiplanet.com

"there is no distribution system with ad hoc wireless LANs, users don't have effective access to the Internet and other wired network services. Of course you could setup a PC with a radio NIC and configure the PC with a shared connection to the Internet."

There is your specific solution.

Microsoft and a few other people seem to think that ad hoc is effective at internet sharing.

How bad is interference? Every article I've read has given me only vague descriptions at best. I live in a small singles dorm room (10' x 17'). I have a water cooled desktop. Will the water interfere with the wireless? I have a fridge and microwave 11 feet away from my desktop. I have four speakers right under my desktop (it's on a shelf). I plan to get a 900MHz or 2.4GHz wireless phone in my room. And my lappy can be anywhere.

I've also heard that 802.11b is half duplex. So does that mean that I can't upload and download at the same time? If I'm downloading from kazaa and I decide to upload files to another computer will my download shut off to give room for the upload?

Half-duplex just means that you can't have data going both directions simultaneously, it does not mean you can't be uploading and downloading at the same time. The inbound and outbound messages are interleaved.

I believe you would set up the laptop with "Ad-Hoc" and then create a network bridge between the internet and the network.

I think you could do this if you set up the ad hoc wireless network, set up some router software on the laptop, and configure the desktop to use the laptop as the default gateway. NOTE you will have to either configure a DHCP server on the laptop with the appropriate IP address pool, DNS info, etc. OR enter this manually into the desktop. If anyone disagrees with this, PLEASE say so because I'm not positive that this will work.

On second thought, you should be able to use the Windows XP bridge functionality or even internet connection sharing to do this.
