Dual internet conections?

I have a 4 PC network. 2 of the boxes are runing win2k and 2 are runing 98se. One of the Win2k boxes runs all the time and acts as an MP3 server and a 56k dial-up internet conection. I use ICS to share the connection to the other computers. The problem is sometimes I connect to the internet through the other Win2k box and my brother will want to use the internet on his PC too. I don't want to disconect and run down to the basement to connect the server to the internet every time he wants to use it, so I want to find a way to have the internet connection shared by BOTH win2k boxes so that no matter which one is connected to the internet the others can access the web too. ICS will only work if the server's IP is 192.168.0.1, and I can't set both win2k boxes to the same IP or they'll fight. I don't know if I need dhcp or the server edition of win2k or a router or iis or something else to set this up. Will someone please explain to me how to do this?

The easiest way to accomplish what you want is to get yourself a broadband router that has a port for your modem ( the SMC barricades have this and you can find them for about $40.00). Other then that, you have to have the machine thats connected to the modem on at all times with ICS. On the other machine in the network settings put the ip of the machine you have connected to the internet as the gateway.

You can also setup Winvnc on the Dialup Server and use that to have it connect to the net (instead of running up and down stairs).

Sounds like you already have what you need.

assuming all these machines are networked together:

W2K (dial-up) running ICS
|||
|||
hub/switch
|||
|||
2 Win98 and other W2K box (set them to use DHCP...when they receive their addressing info from the ICS machine, they are good to go!)

Let me know if I've missed something.

N0cmonkey, VNC is too akward for my brother to understand how to use so that's out of the question. TallGeese I'm sorry I didn't explain my setup clearly enough. This is what I got. (forgive my poor text art.)

-------------phone line-------------------------------------->wall phone jack

Basically I want ICS turned on for both Win2k boxes at the same time. If box A is connected to the net then all other boxes will connect through box A. If box B is connected to the net then all boxes connect through box B. I can't turn on ICS on both boxes at the same time though because then they would fight for the same IP: 192.168.0.1 How do I get this to work?

crap! the text formating was messed up. Basically they were all connected through a 16 port switch and the 2 win2k boxes both have internal 56k modems

First of hello to all.Now down to business.

ICS in 2K server is the same.In that configuration you would need to run some sort of proxy on both of your intended gateways.Wingate,Free Proxy 2.2 are pretty good.This would put a lot of administration and potential headaches than you proably would want to deal with.(resources too)

Two suggestions

a)I would set up a Linux box (i use a P166 with a whopping 32mb of ram) and use it as a router.Everything goes through it.Central administration,control and security.Low overhead.

b)Invest in a hardware router.I use a DLINK (network is segemented with 2 lines) the D-704 has a serial port so connect a modem and...you will find this approach the smoothest.Set it for dial on demand and everyones online.
