Dual Format NEC DVD Burner ~$200

Supposedly they are electrically identical. You would have to be brave to try it. Google to see if there are any success stories.

Seems like this is the time to buy a dual format. Has everyone had luck with NEC burners (specifically the DVD burner)?

CDFreaks have an interesting story on the new NEC DVD Writers drives:

"There have already been speculations about the ND-1100A DVD+R/RW writer could be capable of burning DVD-R/RW too. Now a letter from NEC America to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) confirms that the new ND-1300A (DVD±R/RW writer) is "electrically identical" to the ND-1100A:

Submitted herewith, on behalf of NEC SOLUTIONS (AMERICA), INC. is an application for certification of the following Internal DVD CD-R/RW Drive:

FCC ID: A3DND-1300A

MODEL: ND-1300A

TRADE NAMES: NEC

EUT TYPE: Internal DVD CD-R/RW Drive

The device is electrically identical to FCC ID: A3DND-1100A granted Sept. 26, 2002, except for the model, firmware, and FCC ID. The original test report continues to be representative of and applicable to the equipment bearing the changed ID.

Attached are the applicant?s authorization letter, FCC ID label and location, & external photographs."

Maybe a firmware hack will be on the cards soon?

Electrically identical? What the heck that means. You are right, one needs a courage. Not me. By the way everybody expected Liteon will bring down the prices but it is NEC. In fact this is not the first time. They were bringing down the prices of DVD readers as well. I still have their old reader, still works fine. I have their Zip drive, they were at the bottom of these prices and it was always better than IOmega. With that one I had nothing but problems. Cheers to NEC.
