dual dual-/quad-core?

even smp/smt encoding? i assumed that smp/smt meant more than 2 since it was "multi" and not 2

do you run out of hdd speed?
 
You can do it, but it will be slower than a normal PC for the things you will probably want to do with it, like games.

What I want to do is to develop parallel algorithms using shared memory or message-passing in Linux or Windows.

BS, I play BF2142 and COH on my workstation all the time. Over 8k in 3DMark06 as well.
 
CPU's are like a shelf or hook to hang something on. Think about it! As soon as you put it to use it's already at 101% capacity. Windows Vista is like a soaked towel. :laugh:

Yes that's an old pic from 2005 and it was a quad dual core opteron system with 32GB of RAM. Funny thing is the box was a 3U machine and the owner had 160 of those systems built but (of course) I was never told what for.

HDD speed and RAM speed/bandwidth limit me.

There are 3 different Quad Core Xeons available at NCIX vs only 1 Kentsfield version.

Intel Xeon E5310 Quad Core 1.6GHZ LGA771 8MB 1066FSB - $600 Cdn, which is half the price of the Kentsfield Quad...
Some of the dual socket 771 motherboards don't cost much more than at Asus Striker Extreme...
FBDIMM ram is expensive, but not all that more expensive than the top end OC'ing regular DDR2 ram right now.

Something I'm seriously considering.
I do a lot of video rendering which fully utilizes every core. It will probably cost less than hardcore gamer's rigs since I can get away with a low-level video card.

"You'll never need more than 640KB of RAM." - think of that when someone tells you more cores are useless, lol.
