dual display problems

So I've have two monitors for awhile now. I just moved into my dorm and I want one monitor on my desk, and the other across the room by the futon. I have the one on my desk connected via DVI, and the one across the room I've tried two ways and neither will work. I've tried DVI/VGA adapter, into a VGA extension chord, into a VGA to DVI adapter, and then DVI into the monitor. Also I've tried DVI out to the DVI to VGA adapter, and from the VGA extension to the monitro. Niether will work. Is it possible to have dual display if one connection is DVI and one is VGA?
