title is about it.

Im looking at my options to replace my now ageing rig in the next month or 2.

could go with the conroe duo, tried and true; Ive built one, extremely pleased with the results. but I want more...

the kentsfield has memory bus issues.

the 4x4 isnt out, but my idea is along the same lines.

Im thinking a duel CPU setup of conroes may cost the same as the quadcore chips for a while. and it gets me 2 seperate FSB's to work with.

problem is, I cant seem to find any dual chip motherboards. so Im here asking for any directions on where to look. if they exist.

Dual socket 775 motherboards do not exist. Core 2 Duo can not be run in a dual CPU configuration. To do what you want, you'd need a dual socket 771 motherboard that accepts Core 2-based dual core Xeons. Such a setup would require expensive FB-DIMM memory, in addition to the very expensive motherboard and processors.

yikes.

I appreciate the information. looks like im back to waiting for the 4x4 then. my whole idea came about because a dual CPU conroe seems physicly similair to the 4x4 that has 2 physical chip sockets, except with the HSB between them.

kentsfield was a let down, atleast till they figure out the FSB issues; 1000$ for a chip that is outperformed by the dual core in most tasks. I was banking on that being my new CPU.

riiiiight. what dual core cpu exactly beats a 3+ GHz kentsfield?

you know just for my information...

Eh, Xeon woodcrest chips are roughly the same price as their core 2 duo chips. The cheaper quad cores are available now so you can have an 8 way box. A board will cost you 400, same as the asus striker, the problem you'll run into is running crossfire or sli as there are no boards that support SLI with consumer gaming cards and most boards have an x16 slot and an x4 slot, not making it a viable option. You are going to spend money on the fb-dimms since you'll want to go dual ranked sticks and you'll want four of them for quad channel. That's the probably the most expensive part.

Still, properly configured dual 5160s will beat the 4x4 when it comes to most tasks, atleast based on preliminary scores versus kentsfield. We'll have to see how the final product does when it actually ships.

There a new Anandtech review on the front page AMD 4x4 FX74 @ 3ghz vs a Kentsfield QX6700, and the QX6700 pummels the 4x4 across the board. The 4x4 is slower than a single socket X2 system in most cases because of the increased latency in the HT bus created by dual sockets.
