Intel® Pentium® processor E5800
Features 2 processing cores, an 800MHz frontside bus, 2MB cache and 3.2GHz processor speed.
Intel® Pentium® processor
Features classic 2-way processing performance, letting you run multiple applications simultaneously, so you can browse, send instant messages, download music and transfer photos all at once.

dual-core is now "classic"? So quad-core is where it's at these days?

Even in the P4 days, I had no problems browsing, IMing, downloading music, and transferring photos all at once.

Yes, but it is the job of marketing departments worldwide to convince people to buy shit they don't need by lying to them.

It's BestBuy. They would label a dead cat as "classic" if they thought it would let them tack on another $50 to the price tag. No wait, they use the "Monster" label for that.

haha pretty funny. In their defense, single core systems are all but dead outside of netbooks. That particular desktop offers classic year 2006-2007 performance! Dual cores are now the rock bottom choice when shopping for a new computer.

It all depends on what your doing, and if your programs are multi-threaded.

My daughters P4 was just as fast as her dual core when viewing facebook, youtube,,,,, and other sites.

Its only when we fired a game of left 4 dead did she really notice a difference.

So...does that make my Original Pentium 200 (with MMX Technology!) an antique?
Hey...the value just tripled!!! It might now be worth $6.00!

that was awesome :)

Gotta give it to them though, you need look no further than BB to see just how crude modern marketing can be and yet still be effective as all hell nevertheless.

This is what I never understood about AMD's consumer marketing (the lack of it)...I've seen more bazooka Joe bubble gum advertisements than I've seen AMD advertisements. I mean if freaking candy makers know the value of advertising fricking bubble gum how did it escape AMD's execs?

Maybe that is why Dirk was let go...
BOD: Uhm, Dirk, can we talk?

Dirk: Wha? Oh, its you again, can't you see I'm busy making bad words on my calculator when I hold it upside down?

BOD: Yeah, that's great, whatever, look we all got together and agreed that maybe it was time to, ya know, maybe let some of our end-users know that Intel isn't the only company that has cybernetic mailmen shuffling about in the breakroom, or that we hire people who are (shudders) sexy because they invented stuff like USB too...

Dirk: Did you know if I type the numbers 58008 in my calc and turn it upside down it looks like I wrote the word "BOOBS"? I can't wait to show JF, he's gonna literally roll around on the eff'ing floor whilst laughing out loud, I swear, it'll be epic!

BOD: Dirk, we haven't left yet, can we focus please?

Dirk: Wha? Oh, its you again, can't you see I'm busy making bad words on my calculator when I hold it upside down?

BOD: Sigh...say, Dirk, you know how many calculators you can buy with $17m? Here's a check, why don't you go find out!

Dirk: Suhwheat! l8r bitches!

I had my desk with my computer, which has a E-8500 in it, declared an historical landmark site to see if I could get some government grant money to keep it up.

It is, and they are.

Sometimes you see CPUs getting 10% better, and sometimes you see CPUs getting 40% better.

At the very minimum, you guys are 100s of percents slower.

Enjoy.

Yep. I hate using anything that has less than (Intel) four cores. Using anything less is like riding in a rickshaw being pulled by a fat, asthmatic, redheaded kid from Colorado.

Calling them classic is just market-speak for "We charge more then they're worth" and "They're worth more then we charge".

When is Intel going to retire the "Pentium" name?

It's been around for 18 years already! Computer years are worse than dog years so this is truly prehistoric.

I think they'll bring it back to the forefront with the 5th-generation i7s. At least the "pent" part would make sense again.

I just "upgraded" from my Pentium 4 HT machine to a Pentium D 2.66GHz machine I built out of spare parts laying around that no one wanted anymore. We have a "recycle pile" at the office where people bring thier stuff they dont use anymore. I literally paid nothing for the entire machine. 2.66 GHz dual core, 3GB of memory, 320GB HDD, Win7 Enterprise (friend had an extra license). Didnt know you could get something so classic for so little. HA! Its a great machine, and the experience score went from 3.7 with my old P4 machine, to a 4.4. Cant complain, and for guys that dont have the money to invest in upgrades and are always 3 generations behind like me, it works.

You forgot to mention thin clients. Most are based on Atom procs too...with a thin-version of linux on flash memory, they can fly and have virtually no moving parts to break.

The thing about dual-core versus quad-core versus six-core versus eight-core....you have to be running the right OS to utilize the cores...and many Operating Systems and software manufactures license by processor, so having the right one makes a difference or it will be wasted money/technology.

Honestly, I've been virtualizing with VMware for 5 years and started using XenServer recently.... Processor has only been a bottleneck on Oracle DB & SQL servers...I've not seen anything else that really requires that much CPU. These days, disk IO is the bottleneck if you're not already on SSD. My desktop at work typically has 20 ssh sessions, 30 browser windows, and a bunch of apps running....it functions just fine and the system is about 3 years old running Vista with 2GB of RAM.

Picked up a quad core AMD PII 965 last fall, clocked to 4.0GHz out of the box with just a multiplier change. Slapped on a fat Zalman cooler so it's virtually silent now, runs cool (low 30s idle, high 30s, low 40s loaded). Running Win 7 Enterprise 64 with 8GB of ram. I am happy with the overall package, it's fast and rock stable.

My work PC is a P4 3.4GHz with 3GB of ram running XP SP2. It's painfully slow. I actually get more work done at home using my PC simply because of processing speed.
