For those of you who chose to purchase a socket 939 AMD 64 Chip hoping to take advantage of the new Dual Core X2 chip. Ask yourself this question. Would you pay a little more to do more or pay more to be faster?

In reality, the Dual core chip is designed not as much for gammers but for digital/graphic professional/enthusiasts. I don't think too many people here qualify under the second category.

For gammers, buying an FX processor would be a better choice.

Dual cores are for people like me who run a bunch of programs at the same time while gaming.
DVD shrink, DVD decrypter, WoW, CS : Source, etc. etc.
 
They'd also be good for folks who both game *and* do other things with their systems (video encoding, content creation, various multitasking, etc.) They lose almost nothing to the regular Athlon64s, but do much better in multitasking scenarios and running SMP-aware programs.

If you want a fast gaming-only processor, it's a lot more cost-effective to just get a regular Athlon64. But that's hardly a shocking revelation.
 
I can take advantage of it. im a gamer, but I typically run trillian, teamspeak, iTunes (for some single player and all RTS and RPG games), norton AV (which eats resources like mad), MS anti spyware all open at the same time.

I also like to rip my personal movies onto my computer and out side of games I am a huge multi tasker, trillian, itunes, photoshop, firefox, mail, teamspeak, bittorrent all running at the same time on a typical day.

I think the prices are a bit high, but im looking forward to a dual core in 6 months or so. I would never buy an FX since i can OC a regular A64 to similar speeds, but a dual core is something an FX can not provide. Id rather have a dual core or an OCed dual core than a FX that just helped with games and signel threaded apps run one at a time.

They'll help compile times for me, so I'm planning on picking up a dual core eventually.

I personally am waiting until the end of this year just so I can get a dual-processor. (I know they'll be available in June, but I want to wait to see consumer reviews, etc.)

Gaming-wise, I know some chess engines can already take advantage of dual-processors -- I wonder if this means that they'll be able to use a dual-core chip to its full capacity? And I wonder if they'll start making new games with an option to run in "single-core" mode or "dual-core" mode? That would be nice! 😀

Dual-core processor, dual video cards (SLI) and dual hard-drives....when do you think this technology will be "mainstream"? I'm guessing we're still a couple years away.

I am willing to bet $100 that you have never even attempted it. Yes, you would like to do so, and the X2 will allow you to, but don't act like it's something that you do des temps en temps.

Except that the dualies are coming out at the expense of faster A64s.


 
i can see dual cores being for me more and more each day

im gettin less and less bothered about games now...and more and more bothered about doing many things at once, in photoshop, divxing, watching movies, music, downloading, hoping to get into a bit of video work, definately cad work, uni graphics, solid edge

so to be fair a dual core would be good for me, i really am noticing that this A64 3200 for all it is a great cpu....its naff at the multitasking
 
I do multitask. It's the way I play. I have movies to rip and encode. DVD Shrink doesn't work on all movies, DVD decrypter does those. WoW, I have a followbot for it so I follow my friends and attack, with loot set to FFA and they distribute loot to me afterwards. I play CS : Source until I die, then I switch over to WoW for a while and monitor my videos.

So, I should get my 100$ and you need to get a brain.

Games supporting triple core should be released around November. 😉
 
I think dual core optimized game will come out if a few years, but dual core is not main stream yet.

Maybe after the M2 chip comes out prices will start to fall. I definately would like the performance boost, but not at the cost of a faster CPU when the over gains are so small.
