"AMD's dual core socket 939 processors were also running in a back room on ASUS' A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboards - without modification. Although we had known for some time that dual core would only require a BIOS update on AMD motherboards (at worst), the knowledge that off-the-shelf motherboards running AMD's newest gave us a further boost of confidence for the future. This is also in stark contrast to Anand's report that Intel dual-core will not run on current 915/925 chipset motherboards."

That's from the recent CES coverage.... now, my question is:

Does this statement only apply to NF4 boards, or is it a general statement?

I'm upgrading soon, but low on cash and not looking to ditch my current vid card yet (9700 Pro is the only semi-decent part of a rig I won't even subject you to the horror of knowing the age of), so NF4 isn't an option (unfortunately). I'm left considering NF3 and K8T800 Pro, and I was wondering if either will be likely to support dual core processors.

I just don't want to get my hopes up for nothing... it's newer technologies requiring complete overhauls that always keeps me from upgrading for so long. >.<

I would say hold off as long as you can... if you are only keeping your vid card it isn't worth it. Wait till you can full on upgrade... RAM, VID Card, Proc, and mobo and then do it. Make your machine last as long as possible.

I believe that it is a general statement, because AMD was saying it before the nforce4 boards were out, and had a dual core chip running on a standard server motherboard a few months ago.

CheesePoofs :

Thanks. That's good to know.

TheStu:

"low on cash" = I don't have ~$200 to throw at a 6600GT just for the hell of it because...

"and not looking to ditch my current vid card yet" = ... seperate from the money issue, I don't play DooM3 or HL2 (not at the moment anyway) and simply don't need any more punch than the 9700 Pro ATM. If I bought a new card at the moment it would be solely so I could move to PCIe, and that just seems silly.

In other words, while I would just go ahead and do it if I had the money laying around, the vid card is really the only part of a VERY old system that doesn't NEED upgrading. I'm NEVER... or not anytime soon anyway... going to have the kind of money laying around where I'll be at the point of not caring about dropping some on something I can't justify as a worthwhile expense.

Aside from all that, I have other "what I plan to use this box for" type reasons to be more concerned with it's CPU upgrade path than it's video upgrade path.

Where's the orignal quote come from? Dual 939's? I thought all opterons were 940's. Does this mean AMD has a new design for Opteron's or does it mean that non-smp chips will run in SMP? Am I bneing retarded? Probably.

Thanks,
EH

AMD and intel are planning on having dual CORE cpu's in 2006. that's 2 simultaneous cores, in one chip; not dual processors like the dual opterons out now. or maybe you meant something else... i'm not familiar with smp, so...
and the idea of being able to upgrade to dualcore on current boards makes an upgrade sound really good right about now.
