Dual Core CPU or Two PC's?

By asking this I'm admitting two things, 1) I am a game junkie, and 2) I don't understand what dual core will do for me.

So I want to run multiple instances of an online video game on my system. I can do it now with a single core but obviously both instances don't work simultaniously so it is not practical.

Do I need to use my other pc to run the second instance or will a dual core cpu do the trick of keeping both programs running simultaniously?

My system: AM2 3200, 1 gig hyper x ram, Gforce 7900GT 256

To furthur clarify, I am running dual monitors so I put one per monitor.

why do you need to run it twice?

And yes if you set each instance to use a specific core with the correct affinity setting through task manager, it will work.

I ask why because I play FinalFantasy XI Online and people running a program twice do so only for cheats, hacks, and RMT purposes which ruin the game for casual players.

Just adding a dual-core processor won't really help. You'd need to have two GB of RAM, and preferably a second hard drive, in addition to the dual-core. Also, unless you bought a second video card, your framerates would roughly halve.

Depends on the game... FFXI would run fine for instance.

The game is city of heroes. I would be doing it for the fact that I get double the prestige and influence for the same effort. I have done this in the past using a second pc. I would usually just put the second guy on follow with an auto attack. The only reason I ask about dual core is that it is less expensive to get a new processor than to update my second pc.

Jeez, or you could play the game like everyone else and increase your stats like everyone else. That's pretty lame if you ask me.

Judging the op isn't part of the deal. I play less because I spend more time with my family. That game really sucks my time away, but I just cant seem to stop playing it, and the second account is my friends who really has little time to play.

My real question is about the Dual Core CPU's and whether they can turn your system into two machines, theoretically speaking. There are more uses than just that one game, such as Oblivion. I've been thinking for a long time that for the kind of tasks I do with my pc, a second pc would be nice but dual core is useful if it can help you multitask better without having a second pc.

Its interesting what the people who have no skills playing farly will do to make it appear that they are better than what they really are!!

Take the big QuakeCon yearly gathering...
I find it truly funny how many supposedly good players can`t play very well when the playing field and all variables are equal....hehehee

Hey man, do you know anything about Dual Core processors? I guess you really hit the nail on the head about QuakeCon and people who appear better than actually are. Especially since this thread has nothing to do with that. City of Heroes does have player versus player where there is nothing to help either person other than pure skill. I'm not exploiting anything people, it was a simple technical question that I think was already answered. But if we must proceed with the ethical standards of online video gaming then lets do that.

Hey man, do you know anything about Dual Core processors? I guess this is turning into a flame the op war :( I'm guessing that you have more than 5000 posts because you add irrelivant info to up that count.

actually I do have a dual core system but I will not help you cheat on a game!!!
Merry Christmas!!:D

Criticisms aside, to be fair, you can indeed run two games at once but displaying them both would be a hassle. You could get one on the first monitor and one on the second, and providing you have lots of ram it's just your framerates that'll die. What I love about dual core is that I can run a battlefield 2 dedicated server and a game at the same time ;).

This does not constitute cheating. So what you are saying is that you have to pay your cable bill and your friend has to pay their cable bill also. You would be considered cheating if you carried their bill in and paid it along with yours? What kind of reasoning is that? You know I could go on and on. Like I said before, Merry Christmas and thanks for nothing.

Thank you Roguestar for the info. I think I'll buy two Dual Cores, one for me and one for my friend... oh wait that might be considered cheating. Never mind ;)

Yea it would work better with dual core.

I dont know but its a thought. If you kept one instance minimized and maximized the one you're using, wouldnt that keep frame rates normal?

I say that because on my rig with dual core and 1 gcard i often minimize games and forget about them. After a few hours of playing company of heros i realise ive left c&c generals running minimized, but i havent noticed it.

It's cheating. Your exploiting the game mechanics to your personal benefit without doing the work. Getting double bonuses for doing the work of one IS CHEATING!

People get banned from MMOs all the time for that thing.

Hey man, you dont win an argument by typing in caps. It is a theoretical double bonus by playing two accounts at once. One account does not gain double bonuses, each account gains the appropriate bonus. It does not matter to them whether one person is playing two accounts or two people are playing two accounts. Its not against the end user agreement.

You would be better off running a second client on a second PC. I know people who have done this in numerous games (Asheron's Call, Star Wars Galaxies, Ultima Online, and others) and that's usually the best strategy.

Then again if you think that your not cheating(even if you are) thats your buisness...
But don`t get mad or pathetic in trying to justify what you are doing!

Merry Christmas!!

People who participate in RMT activities use this method. They get banned. If people report you enough don't be suprised to hear from a GM.

Can someone define RMT? The reason I'm not happy about your posts is that you can't just jump in on a conversation using speculation without facts and examples to back up what you are talking about. I realize writing skills are not required to post on a forum but it sure would be nice to have a useful post once in awhile. If you didn't want to help me then say that and tell me that you feel that it is not a good idea to do that or that it has been proven to be wrong. You guys jumped all over me without knowing much. I haven't posted much in awhile on these forums but I think as a courtesy to people you don't know you don't just attack them out right. You get to know them a bit and then decide if you want to bash their fricken skull in with a baseball bat.

Hey, leave him alone. He's effectively paying to have an imaginary friend play with him, so he doesn't need more stress from "real-life" people, lol.

Anyways, I think your best bet is to get a 2nd PC if you want to do this. Sharing all those resources on 1 computer isn't optimal (1 network card, half RAM, etc). Otherwise you'll need another network card, and even then, there may be ways of the company to find out you're running 2 instances on the same computer - which I'm sure is a breach of their contract and a bannable offense.

At least with a 2nd physical computer, you can always say your friend/brother is on it. It wouldn't have to be a good computer, as you wouldn't care about FPS on the 2nd follower.

Dual-core *may* help the CPU resource side of it if it's able to be configured properly, but the CPU is NOT the bottleneck with MMORGs. Cheap pre-packaged Boxing Day sale computers can run as low as $300.

Amen brother! My imaginary friend and I will indeed need two pc's. I conveniently have a second one, I just gotta dig it out of the closet now. If it is a bannable offense I'm sure they will tell me and I will stop. In the mean time I guess I'll start reading through the end user agreement just in case.

So now that I'm done reading the EULA I did find where it says that only one person can use an account. So If I wanted two accounts I could purchase one and then it would be fine. So I guess I will do that since they are not transferrable. I still want to know what RMT is. Thanks
