Is there any advantage to getting a dual core processor if the OS I run is Win2k Pro? I noticed there are patches for XP to get the benefits of dual core, but nothing for 2000. Does this mean a single core will perform as well as a dual core on 2000?

Yes

The patches are for random issues with certain programs. Personally i do not have any of the patches installed and my computer is just fine and has always been.

So just for clarification, is it:

a) Yes, there is a benefit to running dual core on Windows 2000 Pro

or

b) Yes, a single core cpu will run just as fast as a dual core cpu in Windows 2000 Pro, because the OS hasn't been modified to take advantage of the second core.

it's a), Windows 2000 is a dual-processor/CPU capable operating system, and has always been that way

Yes, Win2K will make use of a dual core cpu.

If you do have any issues, you can install the AMD dual core optimizer patch which might help.

I thought the patch for for win XP only ?

Anyway, I have no problems on win2k pro, except some games require the set affinity on some machines. (I think those were not a fresh format after dual-core)

I tell you one thing...Win2K runs insanely fast on my X2...of course it would....but to me, it was quite dramatic increase comapred to my 3200+. I had to manually set it to Multiprocessor PC though..
