Dual core and BOINC

I'm going to be upgrading my comp (hopefully) soon, and I am naturally considering Dual-Core. Will it make any difference with BOINC projects in terms of performance, or will a single core do just as well?

Definitely Dual Core. Oh and it HAS to be AMD. Can be either the dual core Opterons or one of the x2's but they both blow away the Intel chips.

I am 22.00 over budget forr the whole computer now, I still need a psu and a vid card too. but I have the main parts. I want to see how bad it kicks the 2.8 dual xeon's butt lol

I haven't really pushed it yet, but my Opteron 165 is multi-project running Boinc Seti (#113), Predictor (#66) and Rosetta (#91).
Plus my son has been playing the Star Wars Empire at War demo over and over.

Asus A8R-MVP currently running 265x9=2384, on air with Big Typhoon. room temp @ 92F, MB @ 96F, CPU @ 122F
And it looks so good on my new Dell 2005FPW (my Christmas present from the wife) I just love a big screen!

Once you go dual, you develop these urges to just walk into your office to hug, cuddle, fondle and caress your pc on a regular basis!

I'm such a procrastinator. I bought a couple 820 combos, decided to sell one, found about the 920s, so I'm selling the other. None of this would of happened had the opterons not left $270.

I could sure use a 165 dualie @2700GHz or so. For the intel price, it was just a really good deal on a setup. I just don't have enough room for everything.

X2 FTW! I liked my 4400+ so much I built another rig around a 3800+ last week.

BOINC is an especially great client for dual core DC work... unlike some other DC clients, BOINC auto-detects 2 CPUs without you ever having to configure it or run a separate instance.

Maybe this is the wrong thread, but with so many Dual CPU users here I'll ask anyway:

I am not clear on the differences between the Opterons and the X2s. If anyone doesn't mind taking a minute (here or in a PM) I would really appreciate your help.

Just go to the BoincSYnergy site and look for people with small numbers of computers and high Credit counts. Then open them up and check their computers. THe high ones are always AMDs. Too bad we're stuck using P4s at work.

Below is a copy and paste from a thread I read a while back.
bty my opty is up to 778 now

"They are the exact same chip, they do things the exact same way. I believe it works sorta this way - AMD makes "Dual Core Chip A", or DCA for short. All DCA's are tested for their ability to reach certain clock speeds. The better DCA's are given the higher L2 Cache, and slapped with an Opteron name on them. The ones that aren't quite as good get the X2 name on them, and are given the lower speed rating, 3800+, etc."
