Dual-Core AMD Athlon 64 X2 Hits 3GHz Barrier!

"Although AMD Athlon 64 X2 microprocessors were announced only a few weeks ago, results from overclockers are already beginning to emerge over the Web.

Sampsa, a famous overclocker from Finland, has overclocked AMD Athlon 64+ X2 4800+ central processing unit to a 3006MHz frequency, which is currently the world?s top record for this kind of computer chips and is about 600MHz higher compared to the original core clock of the dual-core desktop product from AMD. The experiment was carried out on ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe mainboard with Vapochill LS phase change cooling unit installed.

?Since the A8N-SLI Deluxe with Dual Core support didn?t have any options to raise the Vcore or change the multiplier, I had to run the tests with default voltage (1,49V measured from motherboard). I was able to benchmark SuperPI 1M @ 3006MHz and PCMark04, Cinebench2003 and SuperPI 8M @ 2950MHz,? writes Sampsa, a dedicated overclocker from Finland."

Meh, on phase change. I'd be more surprised if he didn't hit 3GHz on that $$$$$$$$$ setup. Wake me up when you can hit that speed on air. 😉

I'll bet you can, if you could up the vcore even a little.

The sure number of sites that did 2.7ghz on stock vcore was amazing enough when you figure 2 cores and that was done on air as well....I would imagine looking at the venice and san diego cores if you can get a some good core 2.9ghz can be had with air and some voltage....I bet 3ghz will be attained with some vcore and the water boys....I would expect with some phase cooling and some vcore they could have hit 3.4ghz....

Anyway you look at it you get these to 2.7ghz and INtel chips will have to hit 4ghz+ to compete in majority of apps...I think AMD has room to grow into this....

I have to say, I'm amazed. I'm naturally pessimistic, but I didn't think dual cores would clock for nada. But the early results seem to indicate otherwise. If you can buy a 4400 and clock it to 2.8ghz Whooa Momma! the game has changed.😀

Exactly cause a 2.2ghz to 2.8ghz in the right apps that uses the 2nd core efficiently (like some encoding and CAD rendering apps that is like a near 1ghz single core OC.....Havee't seen too many of those done with air cooling of late....And ofcourse 1ghz of an AMD OC is like a 1.5ghz P4 OC.....

At least in single core apps it is a 600mhz Oc which many are happy to get now but in apps like I mentioned it can ballon to 1.5-1.8x that....

anyone notice you can't even raise Vcore at all and stuck around 3100Mhz and he still scores 9100 pcmarks?

What do you think a 3600Mhz X2 would get? 11000? 12000?

They should OC like FX-55's since they run cooler and use less power than a single FX55 (clawhammer)

Thats a MAAAD Overclock! Props to Fugger!

I noticed his 1M SuperPI of 26.687 with the super cooled ubber intel, beats my air cooled SD 3700+ by less than 2 seconds, my best so far 28s😀. I do realize that SuperPI score was not his objective, but its still nice to be within spittin distance

Done what? Fuggers board can't handle insane power req...is'nt even beating his single core scores...got one guys phase setup that can't handle dual prescotts heat and a stock vcore X2 beating fugger but can't post to future mark cuase they don't have X2 listed... all in all pretty much what I expected. Too much heat too much power and not very fast.

Water X2 setups will soon be beating phase changed P4D's... Phase changed X2's totally occuping top 10 PCmarks two months from now... remember 1.65:1 e.g. a X2 @ 3500Mhz = 5775Mhz P4D

VERY very cool . In the pics I seen I did not see the vapor chill unit. but rather very sloppy DRY ICE copper home made unit with a ton of codensation but the result were outstanding nice work. Very good reading!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On the dual intel set up Fugger ia really impressing. Nice cooling unit most impressive. I am a little shocked that Fugger and Macci have gone separate directions. Macci is working with the PM and Fugger on the PDE very strange . But very interesting none the less. I personnly like the numbers Macci is getting better not as high an overclock but benchies for Macci seem to be better where dual core does't have an impact . great reading none the less.

Actually it takes almost 4ghrtz to beat the 4800+ consistently! If you get a X2 to 3ghrz it will take near 4.5 to 4.8 to compare.

This thread is about a 3 ghz AMD Athlon64 X2. WTF are you talking about ? BTW, the X2 creams those systems you are talking about. Read the benchmarks, and stay out of this thread.

Hah. He NEEDS that lash-up to compete against us on air....
