Dual Channel Ram Question

Hi everyone,

I have a ABIT IS7 motherboard with 2 Dimms of 256 mb PC 3200. 1 Dimm is in slot 1 and the other is in slot 3. I would like to upgrade my ram with another gigabyte.

Heres my question: Can I stick in 2 dimms or 512mb of ram in Slot 1 and 3 and move the 2 dimms of 256mb to slots 2 and 4? or do all dimms have to be the same?

do I need 4 dimms of 256 3200 or can I miss and match the sets of ram?

ie. 2 dimms of 256 3200 and 2 dimms of 512 3200?

thanks for your help 🙂

unless you are using HyperThreating it should not be a problem, I think only when you are using Hyperthreating you should match the memory for best performance.

so let me get this staright, you have a 2 256s and 2 512s? You would have to di it this way. Put a 512 and a 256 in each channel. put 512 in 1st one, then 256 in next slot, then 512 then 256, then you will have 2 768MB channels. 1.536GB.
