Dual Channel DDR Confusion

This is the current item description on newegg:
OCZ Dual Channel Optimized DDR PC-3200 High Performance. The Ultimate High End Memory 256MBX2 Model# OCZ400512ELDCK
Since this is dual channel do i need, do i need to purchase two of them, this costs 300

Also 1gb of dual channel ddr costs roughly 300bucks, for ocz on new egg. Is it worht paying for that when i could get regular ddr, pc-3200 400mhz for roughly 200for 1gb?

Would it be better to go with a cheaper brand, performance wise, or is the 200/300$ worth the money?

That item listed is only one stick of RAM.

You need two sticks of RAM to put into a dual DDR motherboard. There is no such thing as dual channel DDR memory, only dual channel DDR motherboards. To enable dual channel memory in a motherboard, you need two sticks of RAM, preferably identical ones. A 1gb stick will not work in dual DDR mode, but two 512mb sticks will.

I was looking at the 2 512mb combo given by new egg for $250:
OCZ Dual Channel Optimized DDR PC-3200 High Performance. The Ultimate High End Memory 512MBX2 Model# OCZ4001024ELDC

I believe this would work with my new dual channel ddr 400 enabled gigabyte board, however, is this worth the money? or would a simple $100 512mb ddr ocz stick be a better bang for my bucks?

for performance purposes i am purchasing a 2.8 800mhz fsb p4 and a Gigabyte GA-8KNXP, which is based off of the new intel chipset

Oops, my bad 😀

It basically matters what you do with your PC.. you could get the 1 stick of RAM now and go w/ 512mb for a while until ya wanna buy more, or you can get the gb now and spend the extra dough. If you're not much of a gamer, I'd go with 512mb. Future games are needing more and more RAM though, so if you play a lot I'd go for more RAM.

Bang for the buck really applies to what you're gonna be using the system for. 🙂

I am a very heavy gamer, however is the performance boost from regular 1gb to dual channel ddr 1gb worth the extra $100, by performance boost i mean a performance boost i will acutally see in game, not just on pen, paper and benchmarks, and in future games

"Optimized for dual channel" is marketing $#!+. Dual channel is marketing $#!+. The performance increase with DC is 0.9% compared to SC. 'Sides when it comes to games, vga card is the limit. More memory means quicker load times, cuz textures shall be stores in RAM, not on hdd swap file. 250 bux for memory? u crazy 😉

The only performance you're gonna SEE, would be shorter load times. But not MUCH shorter, probably unnoticeable sometimes. And naw, theres almost NONE actual difference between the Corsair and OCZ in games, besides the price. U gotta be wacko to spend 100 bux on one ram stick.

Ok, a part of that is true but a part is false. The performance boost for which type of processor? Yes, its true Dual Channel gives little gains, BUT only for the AMD CPU's. BUT its also true it gives big gains for the new Intel 800mhz FSB cpus because try running an 800mhz FSB cpu in single channel being able to only get 400mhz of it used. Then whats the difference between that and its previous counterpart? Compare a 2.4C with HT off and with single channel RAM to a 2.4B with same setup. There shouldn't be any difference in speed, there might be a small difference, but less than 1% ebcause each will run at 2400mhz and each will have 400mhz of bandwidth available to use.

go 2x corsair.
the performance boost depends on what type of game, let's consider 3 primary upgrades: RAM, CPU and video card.
general order of upgrades which offer the best performance boost (higher -> lower), this assumes your current RAM, CPU or video card isnt a POS
FPS: video card, CPU, RAM
RTS: RAM, CPU, video card (depends on graphics engine, real 3d, or voxels, etc)
simulation\puzzle (civ3, simcity, etc): RAM, CPU, video card (depends on graphics engine)
RPG: RAM, CPU, video card (depends on graphics)
MMORPG: internet bandwidth, RAM, CPU, video card (depends on graphics)
