Dual Channel - 2x512mb or 4x256mb - any difference?

What do ya think. faster with only 2 sticks running dual channel or faster with 4 smaller sticks running dual channel?

It doesn't make a difference as long as all the sticks are matched. Dual channel mobo's only have 2 memory controllers so splitting them up doesn't have any benefit. Beware though, some companies (like Corsair) only guarantee their modules to run at the rated speeds in singles or pairs. I currently run 4 x 256 with no problems, but if I was to start over again I would do 2 x 512 simply because all of my slots are full now. 2 x 512 leaves you room to upgrade if you should need to in the future.

Thank you ... I was planning on buying 2 512s.. just checking

Sidenote..
I have a p4p800-D

4 512mb sticks
Spektek 2700
Micron 2700
Kingston 2700
Kingston 3200

None of them will run dual channel together if I only use two of them.. BUT.. amazingly enough... if I put all 4 in together they run dual channel just fine...

4x256 will likely cause loss of performance and may even effect stability so go with 2 x 512. Your situation is just plan weird =)

If it isn't registered then it might be an issue with signal strength possibly. Though technically it should work fine cuz its really 2 sticks per channel instead of 4 sticks on a single channel.
