I know this has been asked before, but I want to get this right for my system. I have Windows98 SE alone right now on two striped Barracuda2 30.6 drives. I want to add Windows 2k to it. What would be the easiest way to do this without losing anything.
Here are my system specs:
Asus P3V4X
Pentium 3 866
2 Seagate 30.6 GB Barracuda drives striped using Fastrack66 RAID card
Windows98SE
256MB RAM
Sounblaster Live! Plat.
Prophet 2 32 MB
Pioneer 16x DVD-ROM
Yamaha 6x CD-RW

Any help would be appreciated

If you don't have another partition which you can free up it will be tough installing w2k without destroying anything. Maybe adding another hd just for w2k is an option.

You could use partition magic or something alike to resize your win98 partition and make some room for a new w2k partition.

Nah, just install win2k on to the same drives. Win2k installs in to a C:\WINNT directory so it doesn't clobber your C:\WINDOWS directory where you're '98 install is.

The only possible thing to worry about is that they'll both use the same "Program Files" folder. This usually isn't much of a problem, but can be for certain programs that have different versions for 98 and 2k.

If there is enough room on your current partition, you can go ahead and install win2k on the same partition as win98SE... It shouldnt interfere with your current setup (it didn't with me), so you should be OK...

Just pop in the win2k CD and run setup... it will detect your win98SE and you should be able to do an install... Next time you boot, it will give you the option of booting into win2k or win98...

Well I for sjure wouldn't be to happy to have 2 different OS's sharing the same Program Files directory. Just comparing the two dirs (esp. microsoft shared/system e.g.) and I'm not happy :)

But then again, nothing is keeping you from formating and reinstalling everything when you decided to switch to W2K or keep Win9x.

Bcyl: on another note: If it worked for you it doesn't mean that it will work for everyone. I find that statement a bit short sighted. :) No flame intendend

Having two windows OS's on the same partition that are of the same file system is possible and each OS will work as they should. I have done it in the past and all went well. If problems do occur its not because both os's can not co-exist it is simply because the individual set them up incorectly. Both os's can share the same program files directory, when installing apps to the same directory one has to be sure of how they go about setting them up.

This forum is a place where all can voice their opinions on whatever the subject is but it would be a big plus if the individual that is voicing their opinion on a matter at least have some incite, or experience on the topic being discussed. These are the very individuals that are: "a bit short sighted".
