dual booters, xp & linux

I have a dual boot of Linux and WindowsXP. For the first while it was Mandrake, and now ubuntu.

Myself, I pretty much use linux for everything, only thing I really use windows for, is for my dSLR camera. I much prefer to use Photoshop (and all it's plugins I've gathered over the years).

Anyhow, all has been good in linux, cd's, mp3's, ogg, flac,,,, all works and sounds good in linux.

With a recent issue with my dsl connection, while troubleshooting, I was testing both Linux and windows. (turned out to be an issue with the phone lines) Issue fixed, in both. (nothing to do with topic)

But while I was testing my internet connection in windows, I decided to listen to some tunes. Wow, I thought to myself, this sounds so much better. Windows really gave music that punch so to speak that I didn't get in linux. I went back and forth after that to test it out. With my system, and my ears, Windows sound is so much more than linux. Again, I'm not saying Linux sound is bad, just XP sounded better, much better.

I don't have the latest and greatest sound card, it's a SB-Live Value about 4 years old now. Of course, Creative makes drivers for Windows, and linux is left to do best it can with open source.

My brother also has a dual boot (old computer too, he has on board sound), but says he hears no difference in sound between them. On his end, they are equal.

I'd like to hear any opinions from those that Dual boot WinXP and Linux. Have you found it equal, one better than the other ?

Not bashing either here, on the other side of the coin. I much prefer and feel it's better, is Linux Enemy Territory through linux. While frame rates are equal in both, something about linux is more smooth in gameplay.

The only difference I've ever noticed is that Windows tends to be louder. Kind of like commercials...

I also had a SB-Live Value for several years.

The old SoundBlaster Lives are fully supported under linux by the emu10k1 drivers. These were created with help from Creative, so they are not reverse engineered hacks. The sound from your card should be the same in windows and linux.

thanks, I didn't know that. Maybe I need to fiddle with the settings or something on the linux end.

I think sound in Windows (with Creative drivers) has more "effects" enabled by default. Linux seems to output more balanced sound to me, but the kX drivers in Windows XP are tops for my Audigy 2 ZS.

Hmm, play around with some settings in your volume manager. Songs in linux always sounded better for me because I can easily adjust the bass for my usb audio device. Never found an option for that in windows.
