I'm looking at either

A) Partitioning a 30gig drive on a Compaq laptop and running 50/50 WinXP w/ Japanese WinXP

B) Leaving the current WinXP install on the Compaq and installing Japanese WinXP on an external HD

I know A is possible. Never done it, but I'm sure it could be done. However, B is something I don't know a thing about. Is that possible? I wasn't sure a USB device could be used as a bootable device. Never tried anything like that.

Anyone here have any experience w/ dual-boot systems using foreign lang software?

A is probably the least messy alternative. There is no problem with such a setup. We run Chinese and English versions of Windows alongside each other here at work.

Nope. As long as they are on different partitions, they will be completely independent of each other, except for the boot loader. They will share the same bootloader, so you may want to edit your boot.ini so you can tell which is which installation.
