Dual boot Problems

I am having a problem installing Linux Mandrake 7.2. My system is as follows
Asus A7V mobo
Duron 700@700 cpu
128 mb PC-100 Kingston ram
Iomega Cd-rw
Creative Dvd-rom
Dsl modem
Ati Rage IIC pro
Thing is I create the boot disk and then reboot the system. Everything goes fine until I get to devices installed on my computer. I hang on the SCSI device. I had an Adaptec SCSI pci card but I removed it and I still get this error. Is anyone familiar with this or could you point me to somewhere to resolve this issue.

Often OS's see the Promise controller as a SCSI device. Are you trying to install Mandrake with your HD on the ATA100 controller? If you are try to install it using the secondary controller instead, and disable the ata100 controller in bios (if you have a bios newer than 1004).

Yes I installed the ATA 100 controller from the Asus disc that came with the mobo. So I should Disable that and try again. Will do, I will let you know.

I found two pages that were invaluable to help me install Linux on A7V. The first one here was excellent to get the ata-100 promise working. I have 2 drives on ata-100 controller and I installed Mandrake 7.2 using promise controller. Although I have to admit it took me a lot longer to install Linux than Windows because of knowing nothing about Linux. The second source of info is from SUOrangeman you will find here

I have advansys SCSI card and Linux detects it fine and works fine no problems. I am sure that adaptec is covered since they pretty much set the industry standard.

If you are not going to use the promise controller I would recomend using bios 1005a. I have read a lot problems of the 1004 series. I installed 1005a about a month ago with no problems. You can find the bios here. 1005b & c are out now I have read problems with c I have heard nothing of b.

Yes I would say bios 1005a too. I'm using it and it's the most stable bios in my opinion (not had a single lockup with it)

So let me get this straight ( by the way I appreciate the help, so thank you) you would advise first flashing my bios to the latest update. Then disable the ATA 100 controller in the bios.

If you are not going to use the promise controller, then yes go into the bios and disable it. It adds another ten seconds to your boot time and more drivers you have to install.
