I guess I've been a Unix geek for too long. I've got a laptop on loan from work for a conference next week. The laptop is a compaq running nt 4/sp6. It has a 2 gig partition that I'd like to stick Windows 98 (or 2k) on for the week.

What do I need to do to ensure I don't screw up the bootloader, I'd like to just reformat the extra partition when I give the laptop back (in case it isn't obvious, I want to stick a few games on the laptop :p ).

Alot of games will run on NT4. I never had a problem running Q2 on it.

You can install Win2k without messing up the boot loader, although it will be obvious that win2k had been installed on it. Thats because Win2K will make the boot menu look different.

Win98 can be installed, but then you would have to run ERD for NT 4 to get boot loader back.

And dont forget that compaq may have been designed for NT4, you might need to get bios updates and special patches to run any other OS. This is especially true for laptops.

You should try and see if you can get the games to work on NT 4 first.

I tried to install W2K pro on my friends laptop which was a Compaq 1246. But Win2000 was very unstable and kept doing spontaneous reboots. It's now running NT 4.0 without problems.

cheers

My compaq presario 1255 laptop hated windows2000 PRO. I was having problems getting it to boot etc.... The best answer Compaq had was for me to contact Microsoft for drivers. I was not happy that Compaq did not have drivers for their own hardware etc.... They said they do not support Windows2000 and do not intend to support it on my laptop..
