Dual Boot ME and XP

Right now I am using ME but I want to use XP int he future with a dual boot system. I am getting a new 40gig HD and want to know how the correct way to partition it for this will be. Do I make 3 partitions, WinME, WinXP, and one for Data/Apps/Mp3s? What is a good size for the WinME/XP partitions? I can't seem to find any articles on dual booting with XP.

It depends on your needs. Remember that most software need to be installed before you run them, and they won't necessarly have the same install under different OS's, so that third partition can turn out to be not that useful after all.

Windows XP takes about 1.0Gb. The size of your partitions depends on several things, like how big is your HDD, what kind of software you use, etc...

Yeah I know there can be some problems on software running on each OS witht he same install. I can deal with that, just install again. I think I'd just like to keep an OS on the two partitions and then have a big partition for all apps and data.

What I'm saying is that some software won't work if you don't have it double installed, because the config files, even within the app directory, are different. And if this can happen with your software (like MS Office, for example), I don't see a point having a third partition. At least that's my 2 cents.

The pro is that if the an OS gets screwed for whatever reason (Windows doesn't need a reason! 😛) It would just affect the OS partition and none of my data.

I'm currently doing exactly what you're considering.
I have winME and winXP dual boot.
I have several partitions on my 40gig drive.
I have C: for winME (fat32, about 15 gigs)
I have D: for mp3s (fat16, about 5 gigs)
I have E: for misc files (fat16, about 5 gigs)
I have F: for winXP (ntsf, about 15 gigs)

I put all of my data files on drives D: and E: - that way if I need to reformat my operating systems, my data files are still there. I also save all my driver updates on E:
I allready had ME installed and let the winXP installer format and fresh install on F:
Works GREAT!!!!

I know this is a little off topic, but what dose Windows ME have to offer that XP dosent?. Or pretty much what im saying is why are you even bothering with ME when you have XP?.

I dual booted ME/XP because one of my programs that I really need I lost the install CD and it won't copy from the ME to the XP partition. So I have to keep ME on and it pisses me off.
