dual boot but linux installed first.

When i've been in that situation i've just installed windows then used the livecd to go back in and re-install grub in the mbr (assuming your grub conf is already set up to boot windows off the correct hd). A real linux user could probably give you a more elegant solution than that though 🙂.

Windows installation will nuke the Linux bootloader. So after you're done installing Windows, you need to boot off the Linux CD once more and use the repair-reinstall bootloader feature.

how is your current partitions setup?

sorry it took so long to reply, currently I have ubuntu 7.10 only, on a 40gb hdd. I have a slave drive (80gb) setup as well for my windows installation.

I will try the recommendation of installing windows then repairing grub with a live disc.

but if I repair grub, will it see my new windows partition and make windows bootable through grub as well?
