I'm looking for a SCSI enclosure for 2 full size 5.25" drives (i.e. they're 5.25" wide, and 2 CD-ROM's high!)

Anyone seen anything like this - I want to free up some drive bays in my full tower, and full height SCSI drives are cheap!

I can't wait until the 5.1" bay comes out. I only have two bays, and one of is a dvd/cd writer combo. The other, I was thinking of either installing another combo, dvd-rom/cd-rom combo, or another mix and match. With the anticipated bay, several possibilities come to mind.

Problem with firewire randomly disconnect.

Anyone got this problem?? I think it is not because of this specific enclosesure. I have 2 ADS fw enclosesure and other brand b4. It seems, if i copy stuff from the external fw box to my internal hd, it will have disconnect the whole firwwire devices chain.

Any one have some solution, system file setting or some special way to avoid this kind of problem

I like the looks of the dual 5 1/4 inch from sunshinestor. If I were to mount say a 120 gb hd and a dvd burner would I be able to hot swap between a mac and a pc? What is the needed formatting type to make the drive work with OS X and Windows XP?

Finally would this enclosure have problems with say a 160 gb drive? Is there a magic number that is supported without problems?

Thanks in advance.

Price raised back to $57.95. Uncertain if this is temporary, or not.

The $78.00 version available above from SunShineStor appears to be a very good deal (many thanks to JPSJPS). The dual 5.25" firewire enclosures elsewhere normally fetch in the neighborhood of $130+. Shipping to east coast (Nyc) is $15.41 from SunShineStor. Tax for Californians seems to balance out the slightly reduced shipping - $11.66 shipping, in addition to $6.44 tax.

Absolutely. Any combination of 5.25" and 3.5" devices would function. And yes, you would require a set of 5.25" to 3.5" adapter brackets to secure the hard disk drive into the enclosure.

Ordered an enclosure from sunshinestor cost about $15 in shipping to the US, spoke with them on AIM very helpful and answered all my questions.

Quoting from recent subscriber email:

"Add the Firewire Case to your shopping cart and enter the Secret Savings Code in the red "promotional code" field during checkout (Firewire Card and Cable will automatically be added with code) to SAVE Over $20.00 and get this External Firewire solution for just $57.95!"

Code is readily available elsewhere, and thus not included in the above.

Happen to have the ADS Pyro model, as well as the above dual enclosure. They are both very well made, and have never had a problem with either. Both (natively) compatible under Xp, of course. For comparison purposes, the ADS Pyro currently houses a Lite-on 52246s, while the dual enclosure contains two Western Digital 120GB SE drives (btw, the cable select method functions best with this particular enclosure).

If portability is a concern, the ADS model may have a slight advantage; however, speaking from personal experience, the Mapower enclosure is also quite portable. It readily fits into a small carry-on sized bag. On a number of occassions I have packed it on business trips if I am required to carry a large amount of data with me. The weight difference between the two is neglible.

The clear advantage of the ADS Pyro kit in this particular case is that it houses 5.25" devices as well. Above that, I would say personal preference is the deciding factor.

So, has anybody actually tried this mapower enclosure with 200 GB WD drives with any successes, failures? i got two drives that I want to move out of the case.

Any recommendations for a different FW solution if this enclosure doesn't work with those WD drives?

I contacted Compgeeks and they told me as long as it's ATA/133 it should recognize 120gb+ drives. I am reading that drives 137gb and larger require a special PCI card? So I assume this enclosure allows for this capacity, correct...and to what limit? 200gb? 250gb? 300gb? I plan on using two Maxtor 160s or 200s in this enclosure. Can I mix the drive size? 1x Maxtor 120gb and 1x Maxtor 160gb? Please reply. hanks.

Will it work if my motherboard does not have ATA/133 built-in? I do have one card from purchasing a 160GB Maxtor. Will it work then?

Thanks,
