Dual 2.5Ghz G5

For weeks im trying to convince a friend that the dual processors in the G5, (2.5ghz each) YOU DON't ADD THE 32 BIT on both processors to make a 64bit, and you dont combine the speeds to make a 5ghz! Right?

And if you know any links, include them because he doesnt believe me even after i tell him you guys are professionals. He keeps saying stupid facts and turnes the issue around

You are right ... but i think you meant 64bit, not 53 bit. Also the g5 is 64 bit compatable.

I'll try to explain why as well as i can ... with the g5, what you have is 2 CPU's each running at 2.5 ghz. Now, lets assume you have to run a program, but that program is just a long line of instructrions, and the instructions have to be executed in order, ie you have to run instructin 1 before 2, 2 before 3, etc. This means you can only use one of those 2.5 ghz CPU's, because one CPU can't execute instruction 1 while the other executes instruction 2, because they have to be done in order. So with that dual 2.5ghz system, lets say it takes 10 seconds to run that program.

If you had a 5ghz CPU of the exact same type it would, theoretically, take only 5 seconds to run that same program, because each instruction can be done twice as fast. In the real world, it doesn't work like this, a 5 ghz CPU wouldn't be twice as fast as a 2.5ghz cpu of the same type, but you get the point.

And pls... tell him that in AnandTech are computer engineers and specialists from all over the world and they know what they're talking about.

32+32 = 53? Tell him to check his aritmetic as well.

And btw, the G5 is a 64bit processor, and no that does not mean 64+64=128.

Dual processors for a Mac are the same as for a PC, a program will only use the power if it has been programmed to do so. Even then it will only have incremental increases. A 3.4 Xeon + 3.4 Xeon is not a 6.8 Xeon. The processors run in parallel not as a combined unit.

yeah 64.. Sorry typ-o. Anyway i found out there IS a PowerMac G5 with 64bits, but he's saying if you combine the 2 32 bits youll get a 64 bit as well.

I told him 200 times that i got my information from engineers... He said "you got a problem, you believe everything someone told you.. if he told you the world would end tomorrow you would believe him" and other times he tells me i dont believe anyone ever tells me 🙂 ahaha. At first i thought he knew alot about apples. Not that i do.

Hahahahahahhaha.. don't be so hard on him. Everyone makes mistakes. Just asking to PROVE to him. If he doesnt believe me whatever. Let him run his 5ghz 🙂

Ignorance can be cured with knowledge, Stupid is forever.

Your friend seems to be afflicted with the latter. At least have him register here so I have a target to practice my knife-throwing with. 😀

Oh and a little off topic. He's been in america all his life. Ive been here only 3 years. I lived in europe before. If any europeans here. PLS TELL HIM THAT 90% of all civil cars in EU have a 120km limit. The streets are thin and there are many civilians. I cant believe he's trying to convince me into something that he has never seen.

what makes him think that his dumb idea is correct anyways? you should tell him not to believe every bullsh!t he hears.

yup and also 12 year old kids laughing at adults arguing thier head off

edit: its not like idon't belive u guys i take most of my comp advice from here. i even started to argue with my 16 year old brother and saying i took it from u guys but he said u guys are just a bunch of porple in a forum that could simply lie. i quit the argument tho because he would punch me if i continued 🙁

That also. I have to see facts to argue. If i have no facts shown i'm right untill i see them. He's saying That AnandTech is a joke and i shouldn't believe you guys.

2.5GHz G5's will run like 5GHz Optalons because they are 64BIT but much faster than CISC because they are RISC processors.

If I knew what an Optalon was, I might agree with you.

An Opteron, OTOH, is not much slower clock for clock than a G5. There are various performance variables on the Opteron end (chipset, motherboard, HT design) but in general figure 10-20%. Not 100%.
