Please tell me that's a joke.
Edit - It's not. Give me US$3K and I'll WTFpwn that machine with a dual AMD64 rig. 😀

A workstation that doesn't accomodate internal SCSI drives very well and freezes when installing 2GBs ram. I wouldn't call that POS a workstation. Just imagine how great a lower end iMac is.

As far as speed goes with Music applications....and I can vouch for these claims since this is where I spend most of my time:

Basically if you can avoid spyware and viruses on Windows, you won't get the benefits of a Mac.
<-originally a crazed Mac fanatic who has seen the top of the mountain. Yea I used to read all the MacAddicts and worshipped Wozniak, Jobs and ooh! GUY KAWASAKI!! Freakin fruitballs.
You won't do quite as well if you go buy a real workstation, rather than a homebuilt box.
3K is actually pretty reasonable for a high end workstation, including the OS and all, though they really should throw SCSI disks, or at least a Raptor into that box.

High end workstations have SCSI drives with intelligent Host Bus Adapters often featuring cache arrays larger than the average PC's RAM! ECC memory is also standard, something Apple does not have. (and should) 8GB is also quite skimpy in the realm of the "high end" workstation; 32GB or more should be standard.
Cheers!

A workstation like that also doesn't cost 3K, it's quite a bit more.
I have to wonder, are these bought from an OEM like HP, Sun, or SGI, or do you build them yourself?Originally posted by: sharkeeper
Notice I emphasised high end, which the G5 is not.
I have a bid for a pair of high end workstations and the budget for the job is $80k. That gives an idea where that is going.
As for ECC, the G5 doesn't use it. Apparently Apple believes it isn't necessary. Even the lowly Dell precisions we ordered years ago came with it standard.
Cheers!
