DTV switch - why are us nerd so worked up about it?

I don't quite get why nerds on forums are so upset about the delay of the DTV switch... What I don't get is that we're not GAINING service (since most broadcasts are already available digitally), some people will just be losing service - whats the big deal if the cut is delayed?

I'm not being sarcastic, is there really a compelling reason that the nerds want the plug to be pulled already?

Apparently some people still haven't gotten it through their thick heads what DTV is and the switch over is going to happen.

Seriously stop delaying it. Do it, then move on.

It's not like the economy can afford to take the hit (caused by the original and any proposed further delays), since the banks have done a great job of F'in it up

Epic Time Warps...

swbsam doesn't understand...

elimination of ALL old technology makes our lives easier.
nothing should be backwards compatible, everything should be upgraded to new every two years.

stop being such a cheap ass.

It frees up that bandwidth for other usage.

It would be good for the economy, silly... think of all of the people who will have to buy new TV's with digital tuners! Sony and Walmart are going to be raking in the dough 🙂

And, hell... now that you have a shiny new HDTV (because buying a new SDTV at this point would be stupid), perhaps they'll get a BluRay player and a surround sound system to go with it. I can see the Best Buy and Radio Shack managers circling June 12th on their calendars now and telling their underlings to get ready!

The Digital TV Economic Stimulus Plan... I like the sound of that! 🙂

You are silly... I was saying the economy was taking a hit because of the delays...

Happy now?

Meh, do you believe that we'd actually get the money back if we did in fact speed up the process? someone would just go on an expensive toilet seat buying spree.

I gave you the real answer. Right now nothing else can use the airwaves at the frequencies analog TV is broadcast on. After the switch, that bandwidth can be used for other things.

Oh, I moved on years ago.. I'm guessing most nerds did as well..

Which is why I don't really care... It's the vitriol.. The frustration that the switch hasn't occurred yet that I don't get. It's not like we're going to get 'better' tv..

and aren't we years away from white space usage? do you think the delay is stopping the tech giants from their r&d? Do you think they're twiddling their thumbs waiting, or just continuing to do the work necessary to use the bandwidth?

If those other things were ready and waiting they would be complaining about the delays.

So does this mean I need a HD Plasma in order to watch Jeopardy now?

yes. you need to give away all of your old TV's (no matter when you got them) and get new plasma HD tv's wiht the DTV switch sticker!

your old TV's (depending on size and make) you can send to me.

PBS is in HD and some of their HD nature shows look great. But in NYC, PBS DTV is one of the hardest channels to receive. I sometime don't get PBS at all. Reorganizing the frequencies would mean PBS will come in at a greater strength. Also, without analog, the broadcasters can dedicate their time to making sure the digital signal has enough strength and has minimal downtime. In the past, it could take days to get a digital signal repaired.
