Does anyone know how to set up a DirecTV satellite TV system? I tried doing it, but I can't get it to work. How do you read a compass? Thanks in advance for any input.

I can help..

First where in the country are you?

Second, put it about 5 deg lower than they tell you do, and sweep back and forth..
sometimes I can take awhile, but you will eventually get it.

Third, I mean this should be first, but take a small tv/reciever outside with you, it will save you hours
of time instead of the old in and out routine, or even walkie talkies (these suck)

Hi hevnsnt. I'm in New York. Well, this is how far I got. I attached the RG6 cable from the LNB to the receiver, and another RG6 coax from the receiver to the TV. I got into the menu and went to Signal Strength. And that's where I got stuck. It kept telling me to move 3 degrees or something like that. Does the satellite pick up the signal right away, or do I have to hold it there for a certain amount of time? Thanks.

In the manual it says you have to hold it there for 3 secs (that is bs) just sweep side to side about 5deg lower than it should be set at.
your tv will go BEEEP........BEEEEP.... BUUUUUUHHWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

when you get the to the weeee part, you got sat.

Just wait until you get the dish pointed right, then you can connect the VCR

You don't have to connect the vcr to get it installed, it probably has that so you understand how to connect it to tape your shows. Just to get it installed having it direct to the TV is easiest.

BTW, we tried getting one working with an older receiver and inside an apartment. The problem was, adjusting the dish by holding it in your hand is VERY DIFFICULT. Just trying to keep it in one spot, your arms will probably shake enough to drop the signal. Your best bet is to get it mounted properly in the general direction and then loosen a couple of the addjustment bolts and make small changes.

On the older receiver it takes a few seconds to register the signal locking in, so, you have to make small adjustments and be slow. On newer receivers, you might be able to move it a little faster, but, it's very sensitive.

Anyway, where I'm at it wouldn't work inside the apartment but it would if I held it outside the window. Not allowed to leave it out there, so, no go for me.

thanks dman, i was holding it in my hand because I didnt want to mount it just yet. I was afraid that if i mounted it, it might not get a strong enough signal and i would have to remount.

also, thank you amrod for giving me that link. ill be sure to check it out.

worth spending $10 at blockbuster to have some monkey knock a pole and aim it. They have a really cool signal meter that is 10x easier to use than the beep beep beep.
