You don't have to connect the vcr to get it installed, it probably has that so you understand how to connect it to tape your shows. Just to get it installed having it direct to the TV is easiest.
BTW, we tried getting one working with an older receiver and inside an apartment. The problem was, adjusting the dish by holding it in your hand is VERY DIFFICULT. Just trying to keep it in one spot, your arms will probably shake enough to drop the signal. Your best bet is to get it mounted properly in the general direction and then loosen a couple of the addjustment bolts and make small changes.
On the older receiver it takes a few seconds to register the signal locking in, so, you have to make small adjustments and be slow. On newer receivers, you might be able to move it a little faster, but, it's very sensitive.
Anyway, where I'm at it wouldn't work inside the apartment but it would if I held it outside the window. Not allowed to leave it out there, so, no go for me.
