That's a big bite to chew. Imagine how that would affect the desktop imaging process and support issues? I doubt a company would do that without at least thinking of the consequences and doing small batches as tests.

And, unless it was TOTALLY invisible to them, the end users would be messing with it, checking out the stats, closing the app, etc. Just things to take away from their productivity.

I saw that thread last night. I was pretty certain that its absolutely nothing to worry about.

As one poster there said, transferring 22k computers worth of work units every day is a LOT of bandwidth... Especially with large companies having to tighten their belts due to the current status of the economies I doubt they would feel willing to take on DC.

If I was in charge of that many machines they would do distributed computing, but in the name of the company that owns them.
That would put their name at or near the top of any list.

If I were that company I would start my own team and get credit under the corporate name rather than let an employee take credit. With that many computers they would surely standout out in the crowd!

I see the management of that size fleet as a full time job for more than one person, not to mention the network usage.

With 2 WU per day per machine it would take 173,148.15 Bytes per second of bandwidth just to download the 44,000 WUs needed. At 3 WUs per day the bandwidth requirements would be 259,722.22 Bytes per second, or just over 2 mbps, not counting overhead and returned results! Doesn't sound like this could ever happen!

Folks, we came within a whisker of having 25,000 coming to work for us. But management chopped it off at the neck. The complexity of this type of assimilation is why we don't see them.

There has only been one situation that I am aware where an employee was given access to such power...and it was a very unusual case.

And as the politicians like to say, "No further comment."

If you'll take a closer look on the thread, it's 38k computers. :Q

Looking on the numbers, to download 1 wu/day per computer equals 150KB/s.
2 wu/day is 300KB/s
3 wu/day is 450KB/s... I'm sorry, Berkeley timed out...


Taking a look at the current net-statistics for Seti@Berkeley, it's now average 26.64 Mbits/sec outgoing.
Since the limit is 30Mbits/sec an added 114k wu/day is too much.
