DSLR folks, lens advice?

If you don't have any lenses I'd recommend getting something decent for general indoor/outdoor people shots and get a zoom lens later. If you are going to have only one lens to start I'd get something with the widest angle you can afford.

I have a 28-135 Canon IS lens and at 28mm it is equivalent to a 45mm lens which is fine for shooting pictures of people but if I want to take a picture of a room I really need to get as far back away as possible to get all of it in there (important because my wife is a realtor).

Looking more closly at the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX HSM, its only a few bills more than the 75-300 as well.

Whatever lens you get, keep in mind that you will need to multiply the focal range of the lens by 1.6. So, your 75-300mm becomes a 120-480mm. I'd imagine that lens would be pretty useless at anything over 200mm on a digital camera. Especially in low light settings.

Are you talking about the sigma or the canon 75-300?

I was talking about the Canon but the multiplier would apply to either lens.

That is what everyone seems to be saying but I was was confused by your post. So you're saying the canon f4 70-200 would be a better buy, IYO, than the sigma 2.8 70-200?

I don't have any experience with that particular Sigma lens but other Sigma lenses I have tried did not meet my expectations. I would check the reviews of that lens and see what other have to say about it.

I love my Canon f4 70-200mm lens. It is fast and quiet and takes really nice pictures.

Edit-Just checked out the Sigma 70-200mm lens and it is about $200 more than the Canon f4. f2.8 would be nice but that sucker is freaking huge. It weighs over 3 lbs!!!

I've got a D70 (standard Nikon kit kit). I bought the 70-200 2.8VR, SO far, it's hard for me to imagine a nicer lens ... I also recently got the 18-55 2.8 .... also an extrememly nice lens. It's very fast to handle; the controls are perfect for my hand and style of shooting.

I'm liking the D70 alot....I've had it now for a little better than a month; got used to the dials & settings, and have surprised myself with the quality of the photos ... even the mundane stuff. Great color, great sharpness .... I'm luvin' it.

If you are looking at the D70 and the Canon counterparts, spend some time with the camera in-hand. If you have a CF card, take it in, do some demo shots and run 'em through whatever processing you'd normally do and see what you get.

Good luck with whichever you choose.

FWIW

*sniff* that's like 2/3 of my dream zoom setup. All you need is the 12-24 🙂

add the 200-400 f/4 ED IF VR

and you would have mine

if you can afford the sigma/canon 70-200, def go for that 🙂 I wanted the sigma for the 2.8, and because it's black as opposed to the white L's. But yeah, both are quite large.

did you get the sigma 70-200 2.8? Is that why you're getting rid of your APO macro?

During the "Cash in with Cannon" triple rebate promotion I purchased:

D. Rebel with 18-55 kit lens
70-200 f/4 L
85 f/1.8
420EX flash
&
50 f/1.8

The 50 f/1.8 (is fast) and the 18-55 kit zoom lens are inexpensive. The kit lens is a low price wide angle zoom that you can upgrade if and when you outgrow it. Consider the Tamron 17-35 f/2.8-4 or 28-75 f/2.8 as an upgrade. If you ever upgrade the camera, toss the kit in with it.

Consider theSigma EF 500 DG Super flash as an alternative to the Canon flashes.

If I hadn't gotten the 70-200 f/4, I'd consider the Sigma 70-200 F/2.8 because of it's faster speed. I hope you've shied away from the Canon 75-300; as you can see on the fredmiranda site, neither 70-300 is well regarded.

FYI Amazon has a $50 or $100 Electronics promo good until March 13.

Yea, i have pretty much ditched the 75-300...and I really hope that canon does the "triple" rebates deal again. I emailed them, but they said they didn't know yet. I dunno if I need a flash...I think Ill have to wait until I can play around with the camera. Maybe I do...this will be my first SLR period. TY for the info

How is the Sigma EF 500 flash? I was considering getting it since the Canon ones are quite expensive.

heh, I wish 🙂 I found I don't really use it at all and want to try to get the 100mm canon macro, or something equivalent.

the new ones are quite nice and they have ittl and Ettl 2 support, and are just as powerfull as the ones from canon and nikon

i think my SB-800 has a few more features then the sigma but they are ones that i prob wont use anyway

I've also got the 17-55 f/2.8. I love it. Getting the 12-24 soon. 70-200 in the near future. Grab the 12-24! I tested it out and loved it.
