The Nikkor AF-S 200mm f/2.0G VR is regarded as one of the absolute sharpest Nikon lenses ever made, and is said to be a gem for it's bokeh and shallow depth of field (that's an understatement, it must have a focal plane that's only millimeters deep at closer focusing distances). Hopefully the Canon 200mm f/2 will be as well.

Holy sh!t, 800mm! Granted you can do the same thing now without having to buy a new lens by simply using a 1.4x teleconverter, but still. I suppose that if you need the longest glass money can buy short of a telescope, there isn't any other option. I wonder if the AF speed at f/5.6 will live up to the pros' standards.

The Canon 200/1.8 is a great lens, hopefully the new incarnation will do it justice.

The 1-series Canon bodies AF up to f/8 and using a TC degrades image quality and AF speed regardless, so no TC will be better

Plus a 800 + 1.4 would now give 1120 f/8, sweet paparazzi shots! lol

When possible, no tc is better than with a tc. Faster AF, and no degradation in IQ.
If the 200 F2L IS is anything close the 200 1.8L, it will be pin sharp.

At first thought I was impressed with the new 200mm, but now, on second thought, I have a rant.

Why oh why did Canon not simply add IS and new lens coatings to the existing EF 200 F2.8L? It would have been cheaper, lighter, smaller, and BLACK!

I just don't get their logic.

because they wanted to give it 1 more stop and charge a frw grand more for it

the 800 is interesting, IDK exactly why they added it, the 600mm lenses are basicially the must have for sports across the board, not may sports require more then that

i guess bird shooters and other wildlifers will love it tho

ummm, I think this makes sense. They have two L zooms that are 200 and IS.

And almost every Canon guy on the planet wants a faster 200.

technicially its not the longest money can buy, Canon made and might still make on a very limited basis a 1200mm lens

and nikon at one point made a 1200-1700 F/5.6-8 lens

I was going to mention the same thing...

Slightly off topic, but talking about unique lenses... I have to mention the Nikon 300mm F2.0 made in limited numbers as well... I always wanted to see one in person.

Totally hand-holdable! ;)

I wonder why they had to go up to f/2 from f/1.8. Granted, it's only 1/3 of a stop, but anyone who shoots sports or anything fast in low-light knows that 1/3 can make the difference of stopping the action or not.

Ah well, the 85L is next on my list after the MK3 anyways...should be a while before the new 200 f/2 IS L. :p

I am addicted to L glass now. Own two of them and I am now bankrupt. People say that lenses like the Tamron 28-75 are equivalent to L lenses. It is a sharp lens indeed, but it can't touch the color and saturation of a 24-70L or 28-105L. Not too mention the autofocus on those L lenses is fast and silent.
