DSL users: How far from your CO are you?

I wasn't sure what forum to post this in. Sorry if it's in the wrong one.

I think I want DSL, but I'm not sure what kind of service to expect. dslreports.com says I'm 5460 feet from my CO. How far away is your CO, and what kind of speeds do you get?

BTW, is DSL good for online gaming? What kind of pings can I expect? And why do I need 25 MB of free Hard disk space (according to Earthlink)?

You need 25 MB of space to install Earthlink's software, which probably does nothing useful except fubar your system in interesting and concealed ways. Dunno about the other stuff.

5460 is pretty good since I think the max you can be is 15000 or 18000.
I don't know how far I am from my CO but I can get the max that my isp offers which is 768/768.

DSL is fine for online gaming, I have 1500/386 and these are the first few pings in ASE:
DSL Extreme's CA Pro|22ms|66.51.205.56:27501
DSL Extreme KTeams Pro 1.57?|26ms|66.51.205.56:27500
DSL Extreme's CA Pro|26ms|66.51.205.56:27502
[CdG]|27ms|209.204.62.174:27500
Team Smiley - smiley.qwca.net BETA QWCA|27ms|209.75.97.6:27501
[ROCK].1on1r.admin.Up2nOgOoD @WarmFuzzyland|29ms|209.204.62.174:27501
Spaz's Slayground - KTPro|32ms|64.32.143.201:27500
Spaz's Cool Custom FFA Maps|33ms|64.32.143.201:27502
Spaz's Coop|33ms|64.32.143.201:27504

I think the 25 mb of HD space for earthlink is to install their custom software like IE with their logo on it or something.
I don't think you need it, but you might to get support from them.

when i had pacbell adsl where i used to live, i was about 7500ft away.. and got ~1.2Mbps (wiring kinda sucked)..

How true. I have learned to hate Elink.

If you get earthlink just get a router to do the PPOE. Better yet, get the service from someone who offers static. Makes life easy.....

Dont worry about the 25MB you dont need the stupid software.

I got pings as low as 20 ms on my Verizon DSL 768/128 plan.

I was 2-5k feet away from my CO depending how i typed my address into dslreports.

Using Earthlink cable now, get the full 2mb down and the full 368 upload and here's a tracert of my pings, beats my dsl pings by a good bit.

I used to have SWB DSL (Southwestern Bell.) I was almost 19k feet from the CO and I had 1.5mb/s service. I only got about 1.1 though. Upload sucked. Capped at 128kb/s...about 10-12K per sec. :| No FTP off that bad boy. I love cable!!!!!

why the fvck can't Qwest use iDSL instead of aDSL? I'd be covered for sure, then.

I'm a bit over 18K feet from my CO, too. And Qwest does offer IDSL, at least at my CO.

But why in the hell would you want only 144/144 broadband for over $100/month?

LMAO

For the uninformed, iDSL is merely ISDN, it's a totally different technology than DSL altogether. That's why it costs the same and offers little more speed than an ISDN line, as well as boasting the same range.

As for Earthlink, they are a pretty downright awesome ISP. You don't have to install the stupid software, if you're using XP just create a PPPoE connection, if you're using an older system just download RASPPPoE. It performs better and is more stable anyway. You could also use a hardware router, use linux, use BSD, or countless other options that do not involve proprietary software.

I use Earthlink, I'm 12,000 feet from my CO in an apartment and I still get 384up/928down.

Well, iDSL is a little different than ISDN. With iDSL, you are making basically an ISDN call into your telco and then being piped into your ISP with their regular DSL traffic. With regular ISDN, you are making an ISDN call directly into your ISP. You look just like a DSL customer to your ISP.

17,500. Phone company said Im right on the fringe, and was lucky to be activated. My line is capped at 750k since they say anything higher would make my signal unstable.

I use Directv DSL and it is awesome. I am 7870 feet from my CO.

I get about 1.5Mb down and 256k up for $50 per month. The price includes a free gateway, static IP, and the ability to register a domain to be forwarded to your static IP.

I would highly recommend their service to anyone.

Actually, IDSL is considered part of the xDSL group of technologies. It is DSL using ISDN lines. The difference between IDSL and ISDN is that IDSL is for data only, and thus does not use the PSTN.

Damn, I'm surprised you qualified for DSL at that distance. Your neighborhood must have quality phone lines (unlike mine).

I so wish that AT&T would get on the ball and lay some more fiber so I can get cable internet... 🙁

Curious... I get 128k upload capped. Mind checking your Upload speed from 10.5.1.2 again?

I'm 27720 feet and I get about 1800 down and 230-250 up.

Yes it's over the 18000 foot limit, it's called IFITL:

IFITL is an implementation of FTTC by Marconi Communications which delivers integrated voice, Digital TV, and high-speed data (PCDATA).

PCDATA which is simply 10Mbps Ethernet delivered to your doorstep. You can't buy "PCDATA" itself because there are no tarrifs for that class of service. Instead Bellsouth sells a throttled version (1.5Mbps down/ 256Kbps up) of PCDATA as "Fast Access". Some call this "DSL over Fiber", but this is a misnomer as there is no DSL signalling involved at all...it's Ethernet, period.
