I have a telocity dsl gateway with uncapped speeds amd I live less than a mile away from the switch but even with my connection optimized i only get about 367kbs going up and down.

my question is should'nt i be able to get higher speeds considering the close proximity

whats the best way to optimize a broadband connection

Dslreports.com has some tests to see if your connection is optimized and if it isn't they have the software you need to fix it.

Come on... 367k up and down is pretty nice isn't it? Im somewhere in that area with Cable.. and have been for a year now. I believe Tweak 3D.net has guides for optimisation of DSL and Cable as well..

The answer to your first question is yes, you should be able to get better speeds than that with an uncapped connection. At least on the down side you should.

I installed RoadRunner a month ago. Initially, I was disappointed with the speeds I got from the test sites... my d/l's were slower than my uploads... ~340 kb/s down and ~370 kb/s up. Top napster speed was nearly 100 kb/s... once.

I used the tweaks available from speedguide.net and now my d/l speeds test to 1800-2200 kb/s. MAJOR improvement. ;) Top Napster speeds now exceed 300 kb/s. (I know, no benchmark.. but still a measure!)

(running W2k/sp1)

I strongly considered DSL (had SDSL available), but with a 784/784 max from the phone co, I knew I'd see much less than that as I am over 3 miles from the switch. Plus, xDSL cost $10/month more than RR.

I'm pleased with RR... especially now that the registry tweaks fixed my speed problems.

I would think it would be higher for you. I'm near Milwaukee and rought through Chicago and have 608/128 and get around 600/128.

Try doing a tracert, very bad latency will slow down your connection quite a bit, While connected to the internet, of course, clik start/run/ type in command/ok/ as the dos prompt, type tracert www.wherever.com replacing the wherever with a site, and hit enter..... your #'s should be below 100 at any rate, if not, it's a routing issue.

just change the DefaultRcv Window in the registry to 32767. That will give you a nice boost. DONOT use one of those tweak programs or patches.

Why not? And the value you change the Default RecWindow to depends on the OS you use, doesn't it?

Why not use the tweak programs?

And doesn't the registry tweak value for Default Rcv Window depend on the OS being used? ie, W98 vs W2k?

Sorry for the double post.. my system musta burped.

Those patches and tweak programs change more then needs to be which can hurt performance or not give you the speed you should have. The only other setting that you would need to be changed which isn't to often is the MaxMTU setting. Just put in the DefaultRcvWindow in the registry and set it at 32767. That setting should be fine for all Windows. Even though WinME and Win2000 has alot better DefaultRcvWindow setting from the start. Still it isn't optimized for broadband.

Good Morning Happy People :) ,

I've been reading this thread with great interest since I've actually made the decision to get with the times: I ordered DSL last Thursday. I'm getting it thru my local telco, Southwestern Bell. It's the usual "standalone DSL" package; 384-1.5mb down/128 up. I should be up and running by the 27th. At least that's the date the person on the phone gave me.

I can't wait to game online. (Go 'head, laugh....I'm behind the times...waaaay behind the times!) I tried it once with my dialup modem....pitiful. The first handful of times, I couldn't even make the connection. Then when I got in, my ping times (I think I know what I'm talking about) were so low that by the time I moved out of the way, not only was I dead, but everyone else had already left the area! Sad but true.

I've checked out all the sites that all of you good people have recommended. The only thing I could play with was the "check you connection" type stuff. I'm still on dialup, so I couldn't use any of the broadband tests. I'm very leery of any programthat changes my settings automatically. I mean, most of us on this forum are not the typical home user. We've built our own systems, edited MSCONFIG so only stuff we want to start and use resources, starts and uses resources. So why shoud I let some program that may or may not have an embedded "worm" that "tattles" on my system run my pc's life?

I do appreciate all the hints that you guys post, such as "set MTU to whatever" and things of that nature. Once I get DSL I'm going to have to have one of those firewall programs installed and I've read that they take up a lot of memory...configuring one of these programs is going to be a nightmare in itself. I downloaded the Sygate Personal Firewall (shareware version) program. It was rated very highly in one of the online magazines tests. The user manual is 38 pages long! And we're not talking 20 pitch font either...more like 8 pitch! Teeny little words that I don't understand. I'll be posting my confusion later on........

Telocity horror stories abound. Here's one of mine: My Telocity connection is rated for 784/408. I use to get 727/525 consistently with dslreports speed tests, and download speeds of 70-80 Kbs. I ran into some real problems a couple if months ago that turned out to be an inside wiring problem that I traced and found myself. In the mean time, my CLEC (Rhythms) lowered my line speed to 416 bps because of all the packet losses. I called Telocity back and told them I had found the problem, and to have Rhythems up my line speed back to where it was, 784. Well, they did. At least my modem stats page reports my line speed as 784, but my actual download speeds are still around 40 Kbs. I've never been able to get back to where I originally was. I called Telocity back again, and had them open another ticket to see what was going on.

Three weeks went by with no change, so I called them back yet again, and they said the ticket had been closed two hours after it was opened. They said they sent me an e-mail. I said I never got it. They said they sent it to rfeist@columbus.rr.com!!! That was my old e-mail addy before I went with Telocity!!!! I asked why they didn't send it to my Telocity addy. The techy said he didn't know. I asked if there was a record in my file about what the e-mail said. He said there wasn't. Arrrrrrrggggg!!!! I asked if he could please delete the old e-mail addy from my file. He said he couldn't, that I would have to call customer support for that.

Well, that's when I came unglued, gave the techy an earful, and hung up. Only because this wasn't my first run around with them. The only reason I went with Telocity was so I could run a server or two at decent speeds. Road Runner caps uplinks at 128, and they frown on servers. Oh well. My struggle continues.

>>General patches usually do harm instead of good.<<

Probably not a bad generality. In my case (W2k), I had too much stuff going on and too little time to do all the manual stuff (learn what I'm doing as I go along). So I closed my eyes, held my breath and did that auto thang.

My broadband speeds increased dramatically. DSLreports tests went from ~340 kbp/s down to 1800-2000+k bp/s. Up stayed the same around 370k bp/s.
