I'm sharing a DSL connection via a hub with my roomate. Whenever he downloads something, the whole network connection on my computer feels slow. i.e. I get a high ping when I play games, webpages load up a lot slower...

He doesn't seem to be downloading at the full speed the dsl modem is capable of, so is this problem due to using a hub instead of a switch? Or is there anyway to use something to limit bandwidth to each computer?

Are you mixing speeds in your NICs? IE: Do you have a 10Base, and he a 100Base? Also, if you have empty ports on the hub, try re-arranging the patch cables and see if this solves it.

hm come to think of it, he has a 100/10 card whereas I only have a 10 card. BUT the hub is only 10base capable...
hmm it's a 4-port...would switching around the cables do something? I'll try it

Switching the cables might work if, for some reason, the ports are bolluxed and causing collision on your port when his is in use.

bolluxed? hmm well I guess all of them are, lol...switched it and still the same thing. It's a real cheapo generic hub tho. Or maybe he is using up the full dsl bandwidth
