This is probably a simple question but for a highspeed deprived individual such as me (modem only) I am a little confused.

My friend has dsl service combined with digital tv. There is a ethernet jack in the wall and it is just connected to his computer via ordinary cat5 cable.

he lives in a townhouse environment and I believe he may share the connection with other people.

1. why is there no dsl modem?
2. when do you need a dsl modem?

The reason is I am trying to install a wireless base station and it states that I should connect it to the dsl modem and I am having problems establishing a internet connection using the base station.

his IP address is dynamic I was told and the service is definitely dsl

if he has DSL there has to be a modem somewhere in the building, most likely it is located somewhere with a router, then that runs to jacks in all the diffrent rooms

agreed. Sounds like somebody already wired in the network and connected to a DSL modem in some network closet somewhere. I don't see why you should be having a problem, assuming your base station is leasing an IP from the same network, it should be fine.

thanks for replies

I got hold of there tech support guy and he told me that the modem is built into the tv box.

so the the tv box(converter) has the cable and phone line comming in then there is port to connect to the pc.

I think what the installation guy did was run a line from the tv box up the ceiling to the wall jack to the other room

so you do need a modem

thanks

Actually, a few years back I read about someone testing out using a sound card for DSL. :) Since it is just an analog audio signal, you could use software through a sound card to generate and receive the needed sounds, with just an adapter wire type thing to connect it to a phone line. It wasn't fast or anything, but it worked.

Having the DSL service and TV combined is kind of odd. Do you know what service it is? I suppose it might be related to "DirectTV DSL" which is now defunct.

A lot of apartment buildings also have their own T1 line (or even higher) with Ethernet connections to each apartment and you lease service sharing on that. Or they have a contract with a DSL provider, where the provider runs a line such as a 10Mbps circuit into the building, and then put a DSLAM in the basement to provide actual DSL service on the phone lines to each apartment that signs up for it. It turns the basement into a miniature telco central office, but only providing DSL service. The normal phone service would get split off to go to the normal phone provider. Doing it that way guarantees the highest possible connection speeds, though the bandwidth to the provider is still shared among however many users there are.

Many apartment buildings also
