DSL, routers & NetBeui

I have a friend who wants me to help setup DSL in his shop....I have never used DSL.

He has two PCs (XP and 98) hardwired with a crossover cable using NetBeui

If I install the DSL connection, in order to share it with both PCs will he need a router/switch?

If he buys a router, will he need to change to TCP/IP protocol?

Just want to get my head staright before I open too many cans of worms.

Best bet is to get a router with at least SPI (stateful packet inspection), disable netbui, bind TCP to both and use the router.

TCP/IP is needed for the Internet.

You can leave both NetBEUI and TCP/IP On it works well for small Network.

Routers aren't even that expensive. Just get a router and get normal cat5 cables going into it from each computer. TCP/IP is necessary.

Ditto. And I don't see a reason to keep using NetBEUI

His Win 98 machine is FUBAR, it would not connect to other PC using TCP/IP, thats why I had to use NetBeui

So I guess if he wants web access on both PCs it involves a router and a lot of work on that 98 machine (a P200 with 64Mb RAM)

Do not worry about NetBEUI. Hating NetBEUI is a common Cliché.

Most people can Not give a coherent true explanation to "Why Not NetBEUI on a small Network"?

Get a Router, the connection should look like this: http://www.ezlan.net/network/router.jpg

Add TCP/IP to both computers (it take few minutes) and every thing should work.

NetBEUI is a low overhead fast LAN protocol. There is no reason to not use it, more to the point it should be used as an extra secruity measure for file and printer sharing.

Get a router/switch combination. Install/configure TCP/IP to for DHCP. Then "unbind" file and print sharing from TCP/IP. This will ensure that there is no way to connect to file or print shares from the internet, as NetBEUI is not routable.

I agree on the use of Netbeui for a small lan, to put it simply, it just works. After a couple of years of fighting with tcp/ip lan drop-outs, not internet, on my small lan, I FINALLY went back to Netbeui. Every day I use my Lan, there are my other computers, no hassels, no messing around with my network config, just simple connection heaven. That's the way it should always have been. By the way the netbeui files are on the Win XP dsk. My sys has a Linksys router using tcp/ip for internet and Netbeui for lan, as suggested by other posters.

The problem I have is that the Win 98 will not connect to the other using TCP/IP
Thats teh reason I installed NetBeui on both.

If I convince the guy to buy a router/switch and I still cant get get it to connect I will be in trouble. I really do not want to spend time reinstalling windows to fix it. As I mentioned, the PC is ancient and if I start messing with it it might croak completely.

Will this work:

Buy another network card. Connect DSL to card one using TCP/IP, connect card two to Win98 machine using NetBeui. Internet will only be accessible from one machine, but files can be shared between both.

Do DSL modems have RJ45 connections or are some USB (like cable modems)?

Some are Ethernet only (RJ-45).

Some are USN Only.

Many are both.

There are some that have both RJ45 and USB but most do NOT support both live at the same time so beware.

In other words you can one PC hooked up to a Ethernet port while running the other PC off the USB cable on the Modem and they both have Internet access.

The Zoom X3 DSL Modem has both Ports live at the same time for example.
