You don't need one computer connected all the time. That would free up one computer... and save electricity? Oh, and you won't spend hours configuring NAT and stuff on a software router... a hardware router does these things automatically

If your router has an in-built hub, you can just plug your computers directly to it. If not, you will need a separate hub where you uplink the internet traffic from your router to your local LAN.

I already have one, Linksys with a built in 4 port switch.
Does anyone have any input in those?

The Linksys is better than NetGear, with a lot more features and most importantly the built in switch. Its definitely worth it because you dont have to have one machine on all the time as the server/host, second your client machines will not lose connection at all(in case your host crashes or fails), third it'll easier on your utility bill.

I have nothing but positive things to say about my Netgear Gateway Router RT311, though not like the RT314, still very impressive. Very easy to setup (via Telnet for me), I have two servers running 24/7, for Intranet and Internet stuff via my ADSL connection. I also run gaming server for clan matches (my brothers clan for OGL/Counter-Strike).

That?s a good one too, similar to the RT311/314. The fact that they both offer NAT, is the only real reason I needed to pick one up, I think the only reason why I choose to the Netgear over the Linksys is because of its metal case.

I absolutely love my Linksys BEFSR41 4 Port Cable/DSL Router. They are going for $149.95 at buy.com, can't beat that price...
