I have Earthlink DSL on a separate phone line. I also have two computers in different rooms and 2 DSL modems. Can I install a modem in each computer and use both at the same time? Will this work? Thanks in advance

AFAIK, as long as you install them both on the phoneline on which dsl was installed on, and you are able to get multiple ip's, it should work. But, I could be wrong. But, do you know if your connection uses PPPoE or something else?

In that case, in order to use both PC's, I THINK you'll either have to pay for another IP adress so you can use the other modem, or use one modem and get a router, then plug both PCs into the router. This is what I've done, and I have PPPoE too. The only problem is, if they are in different rooms, running cables might be a problem. There are wireless routers, but they are expensive and I can't speak for how well they work. And, I haven't really had much experience with the multiple IP thing either, so you might want to check with your ISP for that, or get a second opinion from here.

EDIT: Good luck.

I believe your right acexg, if Earthlink is giving you 1 dynamic IP and uses PPPoE then the best way to go is with a Gateway-Router/Switch like the Netgear RT314 that was all over the hot deal forum this weekend. I picked one up myself at Best Buy on Sunday for $49.
This gear is sweet, no more PPPoE software to deal with, always on and very secure.

Yeah, I got the Netgear RT314 at CompUSA a few months back, works great, no more annoying connection software.

I am not sure on this one but I thought that DSL wasn't provisioned, like ISDN for example, with multiple channels? How would a DSL modem filter out the other DSL modem signal on the same wire? The more I think about it the more I don't think it will work. Hey, I could be wrong though. Tell us if you get it to fly.

igiveup might be right. If he is, even if you pay for multiple ip's, you won't have to have a router, but you will need to have the PCs connected to one modem by a switch or hub.

Hi, sorry to drag out an old topic, but was there ever a solution to this? I have the exact same situation as yobriman. I FINALLY convinced my parents to chip in on a DSL connection.

<EDIT>Forgot to add that my family would have to drug me before they'd be able to get my computer out of my room, so relocation of mine is not an option.</EDIT>

Now we have a slow computer in the family room and my 900 Mhz TBird in my room which are too far apart to be wired with a network (without putting some extreme holes in the floor).

Both computers would be on the same phone line, but coming out of different jacks.

I've tried to be as detailed as possible, if anyone can help, please do so.

Thanks from a frustrated 56ker,

CK
