DSL or Cable?

DSL, had both for over a year and am finally cancelling cable. Too many slowdowns and too buggy.

Really really depends on the area, I've had great and bad experiences with both. Why don't you list your area in the title and make it more specific. Usually though, DSL is a b1tch to get up and running. I ordered it around 2-3 weeks ago, and haven't heard back from them since. They were suppose to give me a confirmation date in less than a week... right. Anyway, good luck! Are you going to network your computers together? You could spend your time in the meantime looking into it. I'm starting to buy my networking equipment while I wait...

dsl.. cable... dsl.. cable... right now, i wouldn't care... i would just want either one. stuck on a high ping'd 28.8.... yep, crap ass phone lines. DSL... i can get IDSL for $90/mo. hrmm... sorry, my parents won't go for that. They were going to go for cable, supposedly $34/mo, free til feb, free install, pay for modem... and it's $10 more than a second phone line.. then the ISP costs, then the fact I can set it up so all three of our computers can use the net at the same time (yes, i can do that now, but for a 28.8? nah).

Hrmm... not much of a help, more of a rant. well, go for what you can afford more in the long run, use the money you save to enjoy yourself

I'd recommend DSL for its clear, consistent digital line....which is your own, completely. I get about 40 k/s up and down on my 384/384 DSL connection, and I love it.

It depends though really, try asking some neighbors or something what they think of the cable service in your area. Some people have a super fast, no-problems-ever cable line, while other people have slowdowns during peak hours and such

your answer is simple.
find out from those within your area what kind of speed/reliability/consistancy they are getting from their respective services, be it cable or dsl.
then choose from the response you get.

Actually the only problems I have heard of with SWBELL is the install hassles. I think all the DSL services are having that problem though. I know I need to ask folks in my neighborhood, but well, they're all freaks.

Depends.
I work for verizon, heh. Not the best company to deal with.
Dsl should technically be faster and in many cases it is.
But its really streatching what that copper can do.
Especially in heavily populated, older regions.
I personally have cable. Fast, cheap, cake to swindle techs.
Eventually cable will be banded, each household has its own frequency.
That would eliminate many problems
But if I was really close to the CO, I would go for a high speed SDSL connection.
Static Ips, and guaranteeded bandwidth.

I'd do with cable, but that's my personal opinion. I'd do some research if i were you, before you come to a decision. I can't wait until some kind of high(er) speed access is available here. I live in a small mudspot in the road town and all we have is dialup unless i want to shell out $600 for a satelite connection.

Go to dslreports, put in your zip and determine what's available in your area. You can also read reviews of those in your area. I have DSL, it's great - 780 down and 120 up. Like others have mentioned, it really depends on where you live. I could get cable, but my neighbor has lots of problems, so I went DSL. I went with DSL because the central office is 250 ft. from my home, that was the deciding factor for me.

Go with cable. Ive had experiences with both Cable and DSL and i prefer cable. In my area i didnt like the DSL speeds at all. Sometime i notice speed differences when more people are using their cable connections but even then it was faster then DSL.

I've been using DSL and it's fine, perfect almost. My friend has Cable, and his internet service slows down practically every other day. So definately go with DSL.

I have cable. It sucks with AT&T@HOME. You want to check your mail? Well come back in a day or two. Or 7. Or Two weeks. Just 3 days ago I got mail dated DECEMBER 7, 2000!!!! I told @home about this and their response was, "your e-mail is working now, right? Well, there's no problem then" ARGH!

It's only when I download at 500KB/s that cable redeems itself. Then the upload cap kicks in 12KB/s? You gotta be kiddin me.

I have Roadrunner, well now it's AT&T Broadband. Anyways, it's alot faster than my friends DSL and cheaper. Of course, there's only like 5 people on my node right now. It really depends on the speeds you can get though with each to decide. One of my uncles has 1.5mbps/1.5mbps DSL that's amazingly fast. It all depends on what you can get.

I just recently had a one week outage in our cable modem, i called AT&T @home service tech guys, 5 of them to be exact, and they all had the same gay answer "you just have to wait till friday when we send a service technician out to your house" so finally they get out here after a week, and to everyone's amazement, the problem was that our cable line that is underground outside snapped in half duing the bad storm here in MI Well atleast its fixed now, and let met tell you this, IT GOES A LOT FASTER than even the old cable i use to have that worked. I get an average of like 200 kb/sec now

if it was possible i'd get both and satelite, cause sat has slick dl, and if you can gang 2 modems across 2 lines why not the dsl and cable for uplaod and the sat for dl, and t3 aint all its cracekd up too be, my dads work has a dedicated for like 20 systems, and it aint to slick, of course their server has a slow processor. . and is probably not 10/100 capable. . but it isn't much faster than their t1

im in houston, i have roadrunner, i live in jersey village area. cable is great. only problem is some no girlfriend loser is hacking into me all the time, so after setting up norton its cool. (wish i knew this before i had to format due to virus)i get like 60 ping in q3, i never reset it or unplug it, and its always ready to go. i get about 250k down, gone as hish as 750, not including bursts. upload sucks, 40k, but i have yet to uncap it. umm..yeah its more than satisying, i use to have that like once every month it would go down, but it hasnt done that in forever now. free install was nice and they even did the wall jack and split it so i can watch tv on the tv tuner.

Yeah Comcast@home in the Philly area blows! They must've added a million more people just this year alone... cause my connection has gone down this year. Right now I just ran a few speed tests and I'm getting an average of 900/200 and its only 3 PM... went to play Tribes, ping spikes from 30-999 evey 5 secs. Only time I get decent ping is from 4AM to 6AM and I can't stay up that late anymore! I seem to download fine (over 100KB sec mostly) but man I can't play any games online without spikes... would get Earthlink 1.5/384 ADSL but heard bad things about it in the PA/Philly area. Okay just downloaded some stuff it went over 200KBsec... yet if I go play online my ping will spike. *sigh*

I got an Optimum Online Cable Modem and it works great. I bought an RT311 router from netgear and then I hooked that to a switch. Security in the router and speed with the modem. The only thing is I am capped in Upload speed. I don't know what the capping limit is but it has yet to effect me. When I d/l I can get up to 500k/s it is rare but it happens. Usually around 200k/s.

I too have Road Runner and couldn't be happier. Great tech support.

Southwestern DSL, AT&T, Covad and Speakeasy DSL are all available here. We waited for over 60 days for SWB DSL once we ordered. And still were not connected. We were connected to Road Runner within 6 days after ordering.

Average around 150-210 on download. Can trade in the Motorola modem for a Toshiba when we want. Just haven't found the time.

Very few outages. It's been great.
