one more thing, if I use a router, to hook up 4 pcs to one connection, will this work with earthlink? or do I need to pay an extra $10 for each computer.

I use a router and have 2 pc's connected, web phone connected and they don't charge a thing.

I'm on earthlink cable 😀

And whats this talk of all the complications of installing DSL? I ordered mine and 10 days later I plugged my DSL modem in that I purchased from FS/FT, configured the PPPoE settings in my router and relished in my newfound high-speed goodness.

What's so complex about that? 😕

or, in my case, get modem 3 days after the order, plug it in, no settings whatsoever on computer modem or router, and it still works
Yeah, that sounds like my install. I didn't have to setup anything on my PC or in my router.

Another vote for cable. DSL is more complicated, has contracts, etc.
Complicated? Which part of plugging the phone line in, did you have complications with? 😉
Other than the filters on all the other phone lines and the PPPoE crap, nothing. 😛
If you have a home with a digital phone system things can get tricky...I'm in the process of setting up DSL at this uber-rich guy's apartment and it's a real headache...

Why not just run a brand new line from the Telephone pole that leads to his house ?

That's what the Verizon Installers did when I ordered MSN cable.
They got hooked up a new line to the telephone poll, set me up with a new box ( that split the lines ) on the side of my house and MSN installers used that.
Took less than 30 min.

That must be nice (dynamic ip dsl, that is). I'm sick of setting up people's PPPoE Verizon accounts. It especially sucks if you mistype the u/p in PPPoE settings on the router and they lock the account for a couple of hours. :disgust:

ROFL PPPoe , they also kick you off if you are idle for a bit.

DSL users with Dynamic are truly " Always Connected " Can't say the same about verizon.
