DSL or cable modem? Can't make up my mind (POLL)

After a long wait I can finally get service in my area. Coincidently, I found out from two different companies yesterday that they're now offering service. Given a choice, would you take DSL or cable modem?

Here's what I've been quoted so far:

DSL: 1.5Mb, $64.99/mo for a 1yr term, discounted for first 6 months

Cable modem: ~1Mb, $55/mo

It depends on the company, some suck, some do not.
Which offers the better overall value?
Which has the easiest installation?
Are either DSL or cable offering new customer promo's like 50% off for the first 6 months, or free cable modem, free installation or something like that?
If you go with cable, will they give you a discount if you buy and use your own cable modem? If the discount is $5 or more per then it's worth it.

Cable modem with only 1mbps downstream!? What the hell company is offering such low service!? :Q

I would go with cable, but that's because I have a MUCH better deal over here. DSL with speeds of what I'm getting on my cable modem is in the several hundreds per month while I'm only paying $80. Anyway, with the crap cable offer that you have, go with DSL.

🙁 I can't believe that I actually told someone to go with DSL over cable 🙁

😱

WHAT'S THE WORLD COMING TO!!!!!!!!

🙁 🙁 🙁

I chose DSL personally over cable. But that's because I would much rather pay my local mom & pop coop $40 a month for my 384/128 DSL line, than give mediacom $55 a month for their cable services.

I DO NOT like cable companies. At all. I'd much rather take a hit in a speed (as well as a $15 a month break) and support the local guys, than support a Mediacom.

Amen to that, except I'm paying DirecTV and its the same price.

It depends on how far you are from the Centrol Office for DSL. I was way too far out and barely got 250-350 kbps downstream. It never got faster so I ditched it and went with Earthlink Cable/Time Warner. I now get 1.5 to 2.0 mbps downstream on a regular basis. It's also cheaper, $42.95 a month compared with $49.95 a month for DSL (Verizon).
I'm much happier with my cable modem than I was with DSL.

I've looked into it, cable is restricted to 1.5Mbps downstream but it's my understanding that this is impacted by neighborhood traffic, so during 'prime time' evening hours the speed takes a hit due to the congestion. With DSL I'm quite a ways from the CO but they must have put in a repeater locally, as I've been told that my linespeed checks out at 1.5Mbps and they will guarantee 80% speed (or rougly 1.2Mbps) at all times since it's a dedicated connection, not 'shared' with the neighborhood.

Well, if you had said 1.5mbps for cable to begin with, I would have gone with cable because it's cheaper than the listed DSL per month. You've not said what discount you're getting for 6 months, so that discount could make the DSL cheaper. Plus, with DSL, you'll probably be able to get a static IP.

i get road runner cable for 29.99/month. i like cable much more. my grandparents got dsl and have had nothing but problems.

DSL if you want to have some type of server, you usually get a static IP but YMMV. Check the TOS.
Cable no servers from all that I've heard of. Check the TOS.
That would be my break point since I'd like to goof around with serving stuff.

Unless cable was a lot faster (guaranteed speeds) or significantly cheaper my vote goes towards DSL.

You're lucky, my DSL costs me an arm, leg and earlobe and it's only 640k.

depends on your location, if you live in the center of a city where alot of people have cable go DSL (can't believe i said that) because cable seems to bog a little when a ton of people are on. or if you live in a less populated area as i do go cable CABLE RULES. my friend has dsl all it's been for him is problems. and seems way slower than my cable. i personally say cable is way better. personal prefference, but i say if your in a very populated area. DSL cause it doesn't bog as much when a ton of people are on (or so i've heard) but not so populated...cable all the way!

I should but I'm too lazy plus the cable outlet is on the other side of the room in the basement. However there is a spare bedroom upstairs with a cable outlet, assuming my roommate and I go 100% WiFi we can set everything up there.

Also I'm lazy which doesn't help matters. If I were to cut my DSL I'd be tempted to cancel my landline so instead of paying $80 per month for phone/DSL/ISP I'd be paying $45 per month for cable internet only, hmmn 😀

How much is cable internet in Portland anyhow?
How much is the discount (if any) if I use my own cable modem?
Which brand/model cable modems do you recommend?

Ross, if you go with ATTBI, you'll get a $45.95 bill for renting your modem and a $42.95 bill for owning your own modem. Yes, that's right, a whole $3 to rent your modem from AT&T. If you're going to buy your own, buy an RCA DCM235 or DCM245 or a Motorolla Surfboard SB4100 or SB4200 (the SB4220 isn't compatible with the ATTBI network yet).

Dude....DSL sucks compared to Cable. Cable is usually better and more stable. (From my experiences, and all my friends)

In the 4-5 months Ive had SBC DSL, the lines gone down twice and the server dropped the connection 3 times. My friends that were on cable had more than twice as many outages
