Can someone tell me if they know anything in regards to whether you can run win2k with a DSL connection? I've heard from a few sources that the issue is that most DSL cards/units are not IP-addressable internet-seen devices on their own like the cable modems I'm used to, and are usually USB or internal, therefore requiring drivers... And most don't come with windows 2000 drivers. Is this true? Especially of Ameritech or FreeDSL?

Hi,

I'm not sure about Ameritech and FREEDSL, but I have Pacbell and it works fine under win2k. The software they(PacHELL) gave me wasn't Win2K compliant, even though I specified 2K and they specially sent my software to me. All I had to do was download RASPPoE and NAT32. Pretty straigt forward. Good luck.

As Always,

What are those two things you referred to? Nat32 sounds like a firewall/proxy sorta thing, right? Aren't you always able to just use win2k native ICS?

Where can I get then if I need them?

Also, PacBell never specified you can't use win2k though, did they?

Well, it looks like we both work late at night. NAT32 is a protocol/service that basically helps your comp run as a Router. NAT stands for Network Adress Translation. It's free for home use and I have seen it work real well before. I, however, can not ping one of my computers, so I must wait to install NAT at home. You can pick NAT up here: NAT32 Home Page As for PacHELL, they said that Win2K was completely supported. Then, when things didn't work, I called one of their 18million different help lines and was told that I recieved the wrong version of the software. I logged onto here, and in half an hour found RASPPoE and I haven't blinked twice. RAS works wonderful in Win2K. If you need more info, go to DSL Reports Home Page Hope this all helps.

In response to your original question, YES, you can run W2K with a DSL connection. My DSL provider is GTE and my set-up is 3com905 NIC connected to a (GTE provided) Fujitsu external DSL modem. I only needed drivers for my NIC and have had no problems with the DSL connection. I use it for my web site, gaming and surfing. I dual boot Win98SE and W2K Pro - both OSes were easy to set up for DSL with only drivers for the NIC needed.
