DSL not working because of CAT5 cable?

I have a little network setup and I had the CAT5 cable supplied to me by my DSL company hooked into my router. Now everything is fine, up till I find out that my DSL isn't working for like days at a time. Now I think to my self, hey it could be the wiring, so i'll let it go. But then I try to plug directly in to my DSL modem and it works! I then tried another CAT5 cable in the WAN port of my router and it works fine.

Is this common of companies to hand out lousy wiring?

if you put in the defective cable, does your connection work? try it and see.. but it's fairly uncommon to have a defective cable, but I happened to me once (yes, I'm the stupid one that made the defective cable, the RJ-45 connector isn't crimped down tight 100%.....)
