I've got a couple of questions. I currently have adsl service with covad.net it's supposed to be 608/128 d/u. However i get 384/384 d/u. I have a speedstream 5250 sdsl modem rev 1.4.

Is it the modem that determines the speed or is it done on the isp side? Would getting a different modem give me my rated speeds? or is it something funky on the isp side thats making things weird? If a different modem would help, do you have a recommendation?

Cable & DSL modems are much more capable then the regular bandwidth provided by ISPs. It is very rare that the modem will be the culprit in reduction of ?Speed?.

Call your ISP it looks that they made a mistake in your DSL setting.
 
yeah - it's an isp setting.
note - both the line provider (swbell for me) and the isp (symet.net for me) must be aware of the 608/128 setting. I think your isp can tell you whether it is set correctly. I know they bumped down my bandwidth when I downloaded too much stuff. I had to call the isp to get them to call swbell and reset it.

Actually, it looks like you were an early adopter of "ADSL" and ended up getting SDSL. When Covad first started rolling out DSL, they sold SDSL as "ADSL" because true ADSL was not yet available at the time. There's really nothing to fix...if you wanted true ADSL you would basically have to order a new line/service.
