A family friend just got DSL installed in her home and the company as well as the user guide said that it would take the modem about ten days to "warm up and get to full speed" and that after that time she could turn it off(the modem).:confused::confused::confused::confused:

why the fvck would it need to "warm up" and why would turning off the modem be ok after a certain amount of time?

I sincerely hope that this was just a bad translation from korean to english.....

does this make sense to anyone?

SBC has equipment that test for the most stable speed and to ensure that you get a reliable connection. During the first 10 days it checks to see if the modem is retraining a lot and what kind of niose there is.

If your line is bad it will lower the sync rate so you get a solid connection but the speed is less obviously.

If you turn the modem off during the first 10 days it will think the line is bad.

Here is the official word from the faq:

Q: It says to leave the modem on for 10 days? (#8281)
A: This used to be for everyone but is now for loops 12,000 ft and further. Basically anyone on a plan above the "basic up to 384" plan need not apply.

If you have any package above the basic plan, your less than 12000 ft and should have "speeds out of the box".

SBC will monitor the line and increase the speed to the highest possible that can achieved. This process, also called ramp-up, will be done for 10 days.

If you have any further questions please ask one of the Official SBC Techs.

It annoys the hell out of me when even sites like this manage to spell "you're" wrong.

Mis-typing is different from mis-spelling... and that is definately a mis-spelling, because there is no "E" on the end!

I seriously don't care about spelling mistakes that much because the smartest man I ever met once spelled cat with a k.
