Dsl modem help please!!

Quick question for anyone willing to help a newbie. I have a adsl modem / wireless router from consolidated communications made by Paradyne. On my home network I have 2 computers, one is an xp machine with a Linksys wireless card 802.11g model WMP54g and the other a Vista home premium machine with nvidia gigabit networking. My problem is that my xp machine with the wireless card always has a connection to the router and internet but my vista machine only connects sporadically. It usually shows a connection to my router but says local access only in the networking center. My router uses tcp/ipv4 to connect and I leave it on obtain ip address automatically and it usually grabs the wrong address. I have tried inputing the address manually but then it doesn?t connect at all. I also have McAfee total protection running but it is completely up to date as is my vista including sp1 and my networking drivers are the newest version. Anyone have any ideas? I would think that the hardwire connection would connect better than the wireless one but the opposite is true and this is really frustrating. Consolidated tech support was no help at all telling me I probably need a new modem but I don?t see why since one machine connects great. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!😕

Vista is probably blocked by a Firewall concoction.

McAfee is On? What about Vista Native Firewall.

Do you have Firewall execption set so that it would Not block traffic to the Router.

Try to temp. disable both Firewall and see what happens.

Wrong IP? So which IP it does get? If it is 169.xxx,xxx.xxx it means that it can not get to the Router.

I have tried disabling both the Mcafee and windows firewalls and that didnt change anything. The ip address it gave me when it wouldnt connect was 196.256. something wich is obviously not the correct address. The wierd thing is is that when it does connect it does it all at once. I did notice that if my xp machine with the wireless connection was turned off my vista machine wouldnt find the network at all, but if the xp machine was on but not actually using the internet the vista machine would find the network but not the internet and say something like unidentified network local access only and i couldnt access the router home page by typing in the address in i.e. and the ip address was that 196. something that didnt make sense. Is the connection seeing the xzp machine and not the router? Shouldnt setting the address manually force the connection to find the router?

It could be that your "dsl modem / wireless router" was to give only one IP.

You have to get into the device and see how it is configured.

Think I may have the solution to my problem and thought i would post it in case anyone else runs into similar problem. Went to the Asus website and several people have had this issue according to them it is a problem with Asus 680i bios and resetting the cmos will cure it, and the worst part is this has to be done often or the system wont find the right ip address what a pain, will probably force me to find a different mobo.:| Havent tried it yet since im at work now but will as soon as I can. Thanks to Jackmds for trying to help! This problem stumped all of the tech support people that i could get ahold of and has been really frustrating hopefully this takes care of it and i havent screwed up the rest of my system trying to fix this.
